Key Stuck in ignition on 5spd Swap

I don't know if this is a direct result of the 5spd swap... I know the car is still using the AT ECU wiring harness and that may or may not be it.

All I know is that the key won't go all the way to the off position so I can't take the key out.

I tried wiggling the steering wheel and wiggling the key. I tried shifting everywhere and then applying a bunch of combinations as fas as brake, clutch, gear positions. I noticed there's a cable under there that I'm assuming used to be the "Park sensor" or shift psotion cable.. played around with it and nothing.

It used to be an AT so there is no black switch/button. The previous owner, or the original owner before him didn't include that in the install, although it's been working fine without it for the past 2 months, and for the entire time the previous owner had it there were no problems.

I've searched to see if this has happened to any other Auto -> 5spd on these forums but search has yielded no useful results and/or solutions.

Anyway, I'm at work and my car is parked right outside my office window. Took out any valuables, and I disconnected the battery just in case. Otherwise it's wide open since the remote won't lock the car with the key in there. No, I'm not telling anyone my office address.

HELP!

For now I'll just do some more wigglin and jigglin

I know what your problem is. Its the Park safety switch from the auto. The auto shifter has a cable connected to it that runs up to your steering column and your ignition switch. This switch prevents you from removing your key if your car is in any gear but park. On the 5spd swaps I have done I taped up the cabe really, REALLY well and tucked it into a corner where it wouldn't be disturbed. If that cable moves at all it can lock your key in place. Pull your shifter trim up and check it out, 99% sure thats your problem. Hope this helps.

is this that cable with a metal piece coming out of it that has a hole in it kinda like an eyelet? I messed around with it after the problem started.. I pulled it out and it gave some slack, then i pushed it in all the way.

it's a release cable and not an electrical cable, correct?

Now that it's locked, what do I need to do with it? Keep pulling it out and pushing it in until the key is released?

Yeah, thats the cable. it is mechanical, not electrical. I cannot remember if its all the way in, or all the way out, I believe its all the way in. Turn your key back to the 'On' position and try it both ways. On the stock 5spd's there is a little button by the key switch that serves the same function, you have to push it to get your key out. Don't try to remove the key while wiggling it, do one thing at a time.

Also try to move thru the gears and back into park.

You may think you're in park but the car thinks it's in some other gear, hence will not let you remove the key.

Just don't get frustrated and start yanking on the key.

If that breaks you'll be in a bigger mess

good luck !!!

mtrai had it right... it was that darn cable thing

i kept trying tu push it in, then out, and it got kinda frustrating so I just shoved my hand down there and moved everything around. THe key came out after that.. lol

I taped and velcro'd everything so all is well now.

...You do realize this car no longer has a 'park' position, correct? The entire point of this thread is a 5sp conversion, and a problem with it.
