New belts = squeaking?
New belts = squeaking?
A couple months ago I took my max in to get the power steering fluid pump replaced (it was cracked...lovely) but they went ahead and put on new belts for me while they were in there since I was going to need new ones soon anyways. Well a couple weeks ago when I started up the car, I got a really load screeching from what I imagine is one of the belts, and its just getting worse as time goes on (and the weather gets colder) When I hit the gas (btw its a 97 SE 5 speed) it goes away, but it's getting to the point that if I don't hit the gas right away, it just keeps screeching. Yesterday morning it was cold and damp and it did it, but this time when I first got going in 1rst gear it schreeched the whole way through, but once I shifted to second it stopped, and then it was fine after that. This morning it did the same thing. I'm hoping to get a good look at it tonight, and ideas? It's driving me nuts
If you have been driving a lot and the belt was screeching a lot and stuff, you might have glazed the belts over. Which means even if you tighten them now, they will still squeel until they eventually heat up and pop. Check the belts and make sure they don't look shiney at all. If they do then tightening them up probably won't help at all.
