Strange Engine Noise

Hi Folks,

I just started noticing sort of a friction noise
coming from under the hood. Very loud, even
at Idle rpm.

Sounds just like when you apply the brakes and
you have awfully worn-out brake pads, you know..
that metal rubbing metal noise.

Some times you step hard on the gas and it
goes away. Any ideas?

Regards

BrazilianMax

Can you smell burning rubber or see smoke? It could be a belt rubbing. Or maybe something with your alternator. Does it happen with the heat and/or AC on? Does it change pitch with RPM's?

no smoke

no, my friend

No burning rubber smell or smoke at all. It happens
with or without the A/C on. The sound`s pitch changes
only slightly with the RPM`s, but yes, it changes.

Thanks for your help.

Have you checked the pulley?

Engine noise

Remove the belt(s) from your engine and start it up long enough
to see if the sound has gone away. It it's gone, you can spin the various
pulleys by hand to see if one feels like it's not smooth.

Good luck,
SJ

Today the noise started the moment I started the car.

Then it stopped inmediately when the A/C was turned on.

Get a long screwdriver and with engine on put it around different pulleys. Listen at the other end with your ear.Loudest one will be a lot louder than the rest.
You might have diagnosed it yourself though
