Noise when turning steering wheel

I have a 97. When its really cold out and I turn the wheel left and right without the car moving there is a knocking noise coming from under the hood. The car had both the drive shafts replaced months ago and the wheel bearings on the front so its not the cv joints making the noise or the bearings. There is also some steering wheel play and I turn the steering wheel like half an inch both ways and the wheels wont turn. The power steering fluid is old and I will change it but that doesnt explain the knocking noise. After the car warms up or if its warm out there is no kocking. Anyone know what I need to replace to stop the knocking?

And does anyone know a place online that sells rear wheel bearings? I tried partsamerica and ebay.

did you check the tie rod ends and any bushings when you were doing the axles and bearings? Could be them.

The fact that it only happens when the car is cold suggests a power steering issue. Is it filled with fluid? Might it need to be bled?

I did not check them and I know they are old. I actually need to replace any and all bushings on the front and it needs an alignment.
Does anyone know why I have steering wheel play? Is that caused by the bushings? It had the play for a few years actually.

steering wheel play when not moving is ussually tie rod ends, although it could be caused by worn bushings. I'd start with the tie rod end though.

You may need to replace or regrease your strut bearings...and try nissanparts.org for the rear hub/bearing assembly as you will not find just the bearing. If you want to know whether you need new tie rod ends jack up the front end and shake the tire from side to side and if you feel play then you do need them.

They always act up when it gets cold outside. Mine does it as well, I just ignore it all winter long.

Im a lilttle confused. How many inner and outer tie rod ends does a car need. Isnt there one of each for each side/wheel? partsamerica sells 2 outer and 2 inner.

And I found strut mounts on nissanparts.org not bearings. They sell the struts though. Which do I need? The struts or strut mounts.

Im not really good with this suspension stuff because I never had to work on it before. Is there anyone making solid racing bushing for this car?
