i know the fundemental differences in their design, but i'm not sure how flashing the lights could cause damage.

It is the fundamental principal from the old school of though about turning on and off a flourecent fixture really quickly. I have heard no PROOF about it one way or the other.

Doesn't it take time for the HIDs to warm up? Maybe it's a thermal stress kinda thing...

i read (i think it was kev or ice??) that it was more burdensome to the balast than the actual hid itself. like i said, i have no clue.
the reason i ask is i wanna know if i'm going to rewire the hi beams for the sake of not damaging the hids or if it's just to have a brighter hi beam a la 2002.

Actually i talked to a person who make the hid ballasts and he told me there is nothing wrong with it. Most ballasts have a built in mis-fire circuit. If it mis-fires, it will showdown until next time it is restarted.

He said it is no problem and does not hurt the bulb or the ballast.

Now that dont mean you have to test it to is ability, but i asked him if how i got from the auto position to the on position, will that flicker matter, his exact words were "HELL NO!"
