Is my sound system affecting my speed ??

Me and my sister both have 95 automagics. Mine's a SE, her's is a GXE. I have a system, she doesnt. I have 17's, she has 15's (Rims). She has 165k miles, I have 55k miles. Here's my sound setup:

Two 12" Infinity Perfect subwoofers in custom made box.

Audiobahn 2200HCX High current amp. (Big amp, 2 ft. long!)

The subwoofers are made out of aluminum and the amp out of metal. (Gold and Chrome plated). I'd estimate roughly a 35-70lb. increase from the system.

I also have the spare tire in my trunk. My rims only weigh 3-5lbs. heavier than stock, but keep in mind they are bigger. My sister's car seems peppier, but maybe that's just mental ?

Any help is greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Yea but this is just a slight increase. I'm talking is it enough to allow me to physically be able to feel the difference, or enough to show up on a timeslip.

Since you have 17's and she has 15's her car will pull faster off the line, considering both eng are stock. Unsprung weight has someting to do with it also, your wheel probably weighs more than hers. But, lets say for a second both your 17's and her 15's weighed the same her car will still feel "peppier" off the line. Next time you drive both car on the hwy floor it and see who's car pulls faster, at that point your car should.

Yup..

It probably is. My subs and box weigh in at about 120lbs, and when I remove it, it's noticeable. It's not an *AMAZING* boost in speed, but it's there ...

Hell yea. Especially with a full load.

Do any of you have de-tachable systems where you can unplug and take out for racing, or do you just leave your system in ? Cuzz mine's pretty complicated...

your subs are slowing you down. for every 100lbs in your vehicle...take off 1/10th of a second on your 1/4 mile time. something like that.

Hey dude,

It's a great, but fairly expensive setup. Here's exactly what I'm running:

Pioneer Premier DEH-P730 Headunit (3 sets of 4V outputs)
4 Gauge wiring w/80 amp fuse
Stock bose speakers/tweeters
Audiobahn A2200HCX 1600watt amp (2000 model)
Two Infinity Perfect 12.1 Subs in custom box

I am currently running EACH woofer @ 400 watts RMS @ 2ohms. So that's 800watts rms @ 2ohms.

When I have it all the way up, this thing POUNDS. It's soo loud my trunk sounds like it is getting hit by a hammer everytime the bass hits. Of course I don't keep it up that long cuzz it gives ya a headache and your a/c power options will start to temperarily shut off lol.

Heres what I payed for each peice:

Headunit - $260. Retail: 420.00
Subs - $350 shipped w/warranty. Retail: 349.99 each
Box - $215 @ local sound advice
Amp - $340 shipped. Retail: 999.99
Wiring kit - $24 shipped
Installation - $105

So there you have it. Good luck with your setup. I have an SE maxima so I think my alternator is stronger. (125amps)

And thanks to those who replied !

i can say after taking out x2 amps 10lbs each, 4gauge wire 5lbs, custom amp rack 40lbs, sub box 75lbs, more plywood 20lbs and dynamat a good 20lbs of it, i can definitly say my car felt like the day i bought it! the only thing i have added since is the rstb and that weighs like 5lbs tops!
and now with my custom catback on im even quicker on the highway, i cant wait to see what happens with the UDP and Y pipe

I had a trunk full of dynamat-clone asphalt based sound deadener, but my car was nearly totalled last month and they rebuilt the entire thing from the rear-wheels back. So it's about 30lbs lighter now

When I go racing I take my sub box and spare tire out, but the 0 gauge wire, deck, and amps never leave their stations. The subs weigh way more than any of that stuff anyway.

I feel the difference and I have one 12 in a heavy box. The car is slower when it has more weight to move.

Do you take it out when you go to the tracks ?

Yeah there is a noticeable difference, maybe couple tenths of a second depending on how heavy your box is. I have a fiberglass box with 2 memphis studio 12s. Box weighs about 150 and when I take it out at the tracks I can tell a good difference in launching. Hope I helped some
