hey guys
does anyone know how to install DRL on a 98 maxima. I think there used to be one somewhere on these forums under the how to's but i dont see it anymore.
anyway im importing the car to canada and i have to have DRL to pass inspection, any help would be great.

I don't know how to add the factory one on, but you can add a relay so the headlights only come on if the car is on thus when you turn off the car the headlights will come off. Just download the FSM and look thru some wiring diagrams and you should be able to figure it out

 

Just what kevlo said. If you can find the circuit that the headlights are on yu can tap that with a relay that is wired to the ignition wire of the car. That way once on the lights turn on and once off they turn off.

 

Out of curiosity, why do you want to have DRL's? Every vehcile I've had, I disable them, all it does is run a low current to the bulbs and the blow out prematurely. I suppose if you rig it so the headlights just come on each time you start it up, it will run a normal current, but you'll still blow through bulbs quite a bit faster. Just curious.

Super, I just bought a 97 SE today, so I'm trying to learn a bit as I read and also chime in where I can so I can get 15 posts and formally introduce myself. Looks like a pretty cool place so far, very well organized and laid out.

The way DRL's work in OEM applications, is that they switch the ground side on the high beam to power, that way the bulbs are run in series with each other, so each will only be seeing 6.5-7 V, instead of full battery voltage. I've actually hooked these up on my car, with 2 relays. One that switches the ground side of the headlight to run to the other, and then one to switch that back when the headlights are normally on. There's plenty of ways to do it; you could even just run relays to each individual headlight, and put a decent sized resistor on there to dim them.
