Buying a maxima.. how to test for oil leaks

So,

I'm looking at a few Maximas this week. Reliability seems pretty good, but I'd like to avoid any with the dreaded oil leak / ring problem.

Is there a good way to identify a vehicle that has this problem? Or will I simply have to have a leak-down test done on the car?

If so, how much would a mechanic charge for a leak-down test and what would it cost?

Anything else I should watch out for? (I'm looking at 02-03's)

Thanks!

Check for a leaky power steering hose. It is the pressure line that is metal-to-rubber (like A/C lines) between the passenger strut and firewall. The rubber part of the line has a thick foam isulation around the rubber push or pull it down it expose the rubber hose. If flesh fluid can be seen on the hose or soaked in the foam insulation it needs replacement. The hose cost about $180 + 2-3 hours labor.

Mine started to leak about a month after I bought it. It is 2003 Maxima w/84,000 miles.

I just bought a 2003 SE this past Saturday. I just took it to the dealer to have a spare key made, and they found an oil leak at the oil cooler on the bottom of the block (where the oil filter attaches). They told me that its not as simple as changing a gasket, they'd have to replace the entire cooler. That sounds like a load to me, but I'll look into it further this weekend.

Thanks,
Chris

lenwood, let me know how it goes. I think I have the same problem on my '02 SE w/ manual trans after replacing the oil pan gasket 3x.

Just like any car, check the exhaust tips, run your finger along it and check to see if there is an oily residue.

I've had a power steering link for a while, I've been putting off getting it fixed.
