92 GXE won't start some times, won't turn over

I own an 92 GXE. Last June I tuned the car up, replacing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Periodically the car won't start. What I mean by this is that the ignition is turned, lights come on, the power windows work, but no ignition, not even trying to turn over. All that is heard is a slight humming sound coming from under the hood.

I am not necessarily mechanically inclined, but I did do the tune up myself, which didn't appear to be too difficult.

Could anyone give me any pointers as to what to check or look for?

thanks in advance,

John

I should also mention that the last time it happened was this morning at a gas station. I turned the ignition, the dashboard lights came on, the windows would go up and down, etc..., but the engine didn't even turn over. Oddly enough it started right up when someone gave me a jump. In the past when this has happened the car will start if I wait 10-15 minutes.

Sounds like your starter is on its last legs. I'd replace it ASAP as it's a 'towing offense'. At least get it checked real soon.

I don't know why but these starters are the weak link of these cars especially remanufactured starters......

I put a remanufactured starter in about 5 years ago. Do I just take it to a mechanic and ask them to check it out?

Remans never last long and if you got 5 years out of it you did well. You can go to a local junk yard and put that one in or just buy another reman. There easy to uninstall/install, one of the easier things to change out on this generation of Maxima's , you really don't need to be a certified mechanic for this one. If you don't have a repair manual then get one and you should be good to go, good wrenching.

So, is it likely that there is a "dead spot" in the starter? Also, is it a coincidence that this started happening not long after I tuned up the engine?

Thanks again for your replies.

I think, it's just coincidence. You can try to hit the starter with something metal when it gets into that spot again but if it was me I'd already replaced it with one from JDM place. The cost of towing around here is about 3 times as high as the cost of used starter from JDM store.

JY is always temporary unless it came from a wreck that just recently replaced the starter, remember or 3rdgens are up to 20 years old.

Same thing for me when I first got my '94 GXE, but the battery was really bad too so half the time that was the culprit.

Check the starter relay under the hood. I just had to replace mine. Luckly I had 2 spares rolling around in my trunk. My dagnamit coil is out on on no. 1 cylinder. Shouldnt have any problems fixing it.

where is the starter relay? Also, I tried the "bump the shifter" method, which I have to do periodically, but it isn't working for this.
