I am about to replace the 225/50R17 tires on my 2000 Maxima SE. Am considering Michelin tires. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

 

When I was changing mine I could only find 4

1) OEM Potenzas - crap
2) Nitto 450 Extreme - OK
3) Falken ZIEX - for light trucks and SUVs
4) Michelins Pilot sport - good

The 225/50ZR17 is an uncommon size (or so I was told by the wheel place I went to).

Out of the above, the Michelins are the best but they are pricey (I was quoted $204 per tire).

If money is no object get the Michelins otherwise get the Nittos.

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my 5th gen, I would also reccomend them if you would be willing to spend that much on your car...otherwise the Nittos are a good option...

The Michelins do grip like no tire I have ever had before and I have driven in the rain with them once, I did a little impromptu test by jamming on the brakes, no slipping what so ever, I also took turns a little faster than before...

do a forum search on the tires you want, a lot of people have posted reviews and such...

 

Dang I remember when my tires blew on my 2k SE.
And i mentioned the Michiline tires.
No one seemed to care

 

Thanks! I noticed when looking through tire ads in one of my auto mags that the size is rather rare. Will probably go with the Michelins. I know that Sears currently has all Michelin tires on sale.

if you have a Costco near your house, check them out, I got my Michelins installed for 210 a peice...you have to be a member though...

 

My 2cents... I had to replace my tires about 2 weeks ago and found the Nittos online for only about 105 each at discounttire.com, not sure if they are still around, but the price is right...

Pilot Sport and Pilot Sport A/S are different. I put the A/S' on, since I need the wet traction in Seattle. They are excellent...a huge improvement on handling and traction over the Potenza's. The Pilot Sport would be a good summer tire or good if you live in San Diego where it is always summer. If you're going that direction the Pole Positions are great too.

I have Micheline Pilot Sport that I bougt from Costco. 310bucks CND installed fore each tire.

They are expensive, but they have good treadwear and very good performance even with very little tread left, they worth the price.


If you want a cheaper alternative, get the 225 50 17 Micheline XGT Z4.

 

You have the A/S or just the Sport?

The XGTZ4 is going to be harder to find as time passes...discontinued and replaced by the Pilot Sport A/S...called Michelin Product Support to get this answer before I bought my Pilots.

Yeah, if you live in summertime year round...those things wouldn't get me up a hill on wet pavement in Seattle. I agree with you though if you're shopping for a summer tire.

Yeah, I think you're probably right. That's what prompted me to call Michelin in the first place...all the tire shops in the area were listing both tires and Michelin still lists both with similar descriptions. I left a message for product support and THEY ACTUALLY CALLED ME BACK PROMPTLY to inform me that the Pilot Sport A/D was the newest A/S performance tire from Michelin and the XGTZ4 would be phased out.

 

They have pretty good wet traction... look at the ratings at www.tirerack.com for them.Probally crappy in snow/ice, but they are pretty good in wet conditions. 9.3 rating for WET TRACTION, 9.1 Rating for HYDRO RESISTANCE. overall, Great tire.

 

Replaced the factory Bridgestones with the Michelin Pilot sport A/S and this was the best performance upgrade I made to the car. Have had it up to top speed in the rain and it's solid. Hard to make those tires fade......

 

i've got bfg g-force kdw's on mine, but i had to switch sizes to do it.
if you wanna stay with the stock size, check out pirelli. they've got two more choices for you to consider.

 

I'm thinking about getting 235/45/17 on my stock rims, but i only need 2. so i thought i'd put them in the back, like the corvette or porsche with bigger size tires in the back, but then again my car is a front wheel drive?? i found Falken ziex502 for about $110 mounted and balanced. What you guys think about putting the bigger size in the back and leaving the stock up front for now.
