removing/installing output shaft seal
removing/installing output shaft seal
Anybody recently had experience with this?
My car is '99, manual transmission, its the passenger side output shaft seal (axle seal). I searched around but couldn't find anything helpful.
Leak started after replacing CV axle. Drove fine for about a week, no leaks. Then I came to my car after work and had a puddle underneath. Got it up on stands, pulled the axle out and the seal was barely hanging on.
I got the new one, part number 710124, from checker. I found the part number info by searching on here, as the driver and pass are different.
So I greased it up, got a piece of pvc the same diameter and tapped it in. I tapped it past the flush point though..
So I start to put some gear oil in, watched and saw a drip, hoped it was some I spilled but it wasn't. Crawled under and saw leakage coming from the inner part if the seal, where the axle slides through. Spun the axle and it just kept coming out steadily.
I'm pondering if this is leaking because I tapped it in to far? or what the helll.
But as of right now I need to get it out because I damaged it trying to get it out.. I was trying to back it out to make it flush but it tore it.. Now the thing wont budge.
Does Autozone/O'reilys carry a tool to extract it? Anybody have experience?

I am not aware of a special tool for that. I have always been able to remove an oil seal by using a screwdriver, so I've never needed to consider one. I am not aware of a special tool for that. If you put the seal in backwards, I suppose that would make it harder. But putting it in too far shouldn't be a problem because it would only be 3 or 4 mm so I don't know why it is being a problem.
Perhaps if you make a hook-type tool you can pull it out.
Every axle I've seen has an approx 2 inch long section that the seal contacts. Putting the seal too far into the housing will still have it on the section for the seal. Putting the seal in backwards would still have the seal on the section designed for it.
I don't know why the seal leaked when you put the car together. Either you damaged the seal putting it in or maybe the seal in the box had been somehow switched and you didn't get the correct one. The number you posted is correct for the passenger side.
When you get another seal, slide it on to the axle before you put it in the housing. It should be a snug fit.

Thanks for the response Dennis. I managed to get it out with a big **** pry bar. Tore it up but my friend works at O'reilly where I bought it and just swapped it out for a new one.
The problem was it went in to far from this little ridge on the cv axle. once i got the seal in snug it was right over the middle of that ridge, making a perfect seal. Not a drop leaking out.
Thanks again for your input

Cool You got it....For the other person in reply #2, seals don't function properly if installed backwards! The seal acts as a cup on the interior side any pressure is gonna press the seals lips against the shaft even tighter! If installed backwards the pressure squeezes between the lip and shaft, pressing the seals lip away from the shaft and causing it too leak!
