Are you asking in conjunction with valve cover gaskets or all by it self?

I have done it on my old tsi and it never leaked, just cleaned the mating surfaces real good before applying.

 

 

Along with, I've got the Felpro rubber set.

Assuming you're using the red high temp rtv.. I would say you're good to go.

No worries on leaks. Doing mine soon, well the front, and I'll be using the Felpro and RTV.

 

Yes you have to use liquid gasket when replacing the valve cover gasket. The factory service manual tells you to use it so yes. If your facing the engine in the top and bottom left corners you will put it there. You will see a space on the gasket for it on both rear and front valve cover gaskets. Use the Grey RTV liquid gasket.

To keep those new gaskets from leaking apply the sealant to both sides of the rubber gasket where they sit on the rocker cover and cylinder heads. Along with the left corners apply a few tiny tabs of sealant on the right side of the rocker covers groove to keep the gaskets from falling off when you flip them over to mount on the heads. After inserting the gaskets onto the covers let them sit for 15 minutes for the sealant to dry.



Apply to the left corners again onto the bottom side of the gaskets where they mount onto the heads.



When I first fixed this oil leak I only applied sealant to the rocker covers groove and they leaked again within 1,000 miles. I applied to both sides 14,000 miles ago and they haven't leaked since.

well, considering i used the black rtv and it started leaking again a year later i'd say grey as well. i used fel-pro as well.

 

I used red on three different motors, no leaks. but hey, to each his own.
