need help diagnosing starter issue

sometimes the starter does nor engage and all I get is a click

it happens rarely and usually will then engage and start right up on the next try or two but this morning I had to try ~ a dozen times before it engaged, so i'm getting concerned (don't want the wife to have any issues when she uses it occasionally). since I hear the click and all dash-lights go off, i'm thinking that it's not the solenoid and the battery is tip-top for sure; I also have additional grounds all around (and to starter) so i'm wondering if this indicates starter needs a re-grease or is the starter on its way out. car has ~ 190k and this is the second starter (a reman was put on by dealership at ~ 135k in 2007). I've recently put shims into the ignition switch but that didn't seem to fix this issue. thanks in advance for any assistance.

I had put in a new starter back in November, and when it failed all I got was a click and the dash board lights would go off when I attempted to turn it on, after installing a new starter..fired right up.

Y'all max sound better then mine. I don't even get a click. It makes no noise when my starter is out. I've been through 2 starters in the past2-3 years

If your battery, grounds and ig switch are all known good then your starter is on its way out. Pretty typical symptoms at least from my experience. Hopefully you got a lifetime warranty on your starter and you are just out the time to swap it out.

What's a good starter?
Autozone or Nissan oem?
How much is the Nissan reman.

Nissan will not sell a reman starter, new or nothing from them. It's a crap shoot with any parts house starter. If you go the reman route get one with a lifetime warranty so the next time you are only out your time. I've had to do this with my Advanced Auto Parts starter FWIW.

Had the same problem. If it's still clicking you should be able to get it to start by trying enough times. Eventually mine stopped clicking at all and had to replace it with this from
Amazon Amazon
. Easy enough to do myself. Works great, haven't had a problem yet after 3 months.

Could be the brushes, or the contacts within the starter, geasing would not help this condition. I would just replace the starter after checking voltage and connections.
