1991, Standard Tranny, how to drain and refill tranny fluid
Hello,
I am a newby here, but can't find anything online for the following.
I accidentally pulled the CV Joint out and it drained a fair amount of fluid.
thought I might as well replace it all.
I have a 1991 Maxima with standard tranny:
What fluid type to replace the old with?
What is the capacity of the fluid?
Also looking for some instructions/locations of drain and fill plugs.
Also looking for a replacement front Coil for the strut I removed.
Old coil broke.
Thanks in advance for all help and hints here.
Howard

GL-4 gear oil only, i use RedLine MT-90 in all my old stuff and it seems to fix notchyness and grinds. may as well buy 3 or so quarts and just replace the trans. front spring cheapest option is hitting a junkyard and taking a whole strut or disassemble the strut to take the coil there. drain plugs i cant remember off the top of my head
the drain plug is at the very bottom. I believe it is a 14mm wrench..the fill plug is on the side close to the starter and takes the 1/2" drive ratchet handle drive to remove. fill the tranny until it overflow though the fill hole. I use the 75 w 90 in mine without any issues

I did find the fill plug on the side, but there are several "drain" plugs.
Going to size one on the bottom to 14mm.
I will take a few pictures and upload them for posterity.
Thank you both Tiniform and Chrome91
Picking up 75w90 today and going to refill her tonight and take for a spin.
I still have to get to junkyard this weekend for coil, but temporarily put broken coil back on and it looks solid....it's only about one full ring of coil missing.
It shouldn't dip as far as it was.
thanks for your help once again!

Follow up on issue:
So the Advanced auto parts guy said I needed 5 quarts.
As I was filling the standard tranny with 75w90 fluid, it only took about 3.5 quarts.
So I have about 1.5 quarts on my shelf for reserve stock.
The CV axle seals are working fine and I did not have to replace them thus far.
Tomorrow is Saturday 6 April 2019, I will be off to the Salvage yard to pick up a replacement coil.
Does anyone know if I can get away by welding the old coil back together? will it Hold?
thx

If your refering to the coil spring i wouldnt take my chances. That cast metal is very hard to weld and have hold as far as I know and would probably still be a weak point. You should be able to find a new set at a reasonable price. If you wanted to lower it you can pick up aftermarket lowering springs still at a reasonable price too. If you just need something to get you by and your not keeping the car long then sure just grab a pair from the Scrap yard if they're accessible but if your keeping the car probably best to just get the springs new and do the shocks too. One time instead of doing the job twice or more. As for your fluid it may not have taken all 5 litres because the rest may still be in the torque converter. I'd just check your level on level ground after running it through the gears and run with what you have for a couple months then do another drain n fill. By that time the fluid that was in the torque converter would have mixed through with what you put in already and after the next drain n fill the fluid should be pretty good n clean.

is it for sure GL-4 trans oil? because GL-5 and "GL-4 and GL-5" compatible gear oil have sulfur that will destroy the brass synchros in old transmissions
aftermarket lowering springs are ***** hard to come by now but i definitely wouldnt weld, especially since the welds likely would hold on that old metal. Ebay theyre all from Kangarooland and the price is up there

Chrome91,
Roger on the the "NO WELD".
I did use GL-4 only works fine. Shifts smoothly.
I went to local salvage yard, for $10 pulled front driver side strut/coil spring off of a 1989 maxima.
It fit and performs like a charm on my 1991.
Thanks,
Howard
