Map Updates via USB Produce Unusual Results

Decided to update maps on recently acquired new 2019 SL. Completed the excercise in 2 phases, updating half of the maps each time. Update process was simple enough but side effects wiped out my paired phones etc, removed all my sat presets, undid some of my nav settings and probably a few more items I have not realised yet. Curious as to the experience of others.

Also to say the maps are updated is a stretch. A new major interchange completed about 5km from where I live in the fall of 2018 is not included in the update. Anyone have an idea as to how often TomTom provides updates. But at least the updates are free!!

How much time did the updates take? Given the dubious benefits and older updates offered, why bother?

I have a 19 Maxima SV and when i check to see if there are any available updates through the navigation menus, it says that there are none available. How do you know that one was available for your car? I will be doing mine via WIFI since i can just do it through my garage.

robtroxel: Valid question given the result that the maps are still about 18 months outdated. Downloading the maps to the USB was not particularly fast, but that was no problem since started the process and left the PC to do its thing for 60-90 minutes. However inputting the maps to the car was quite fast. On average about four (4) minutes per state group map.

LSExplorer22; Having followed the instruction to load map info onto the USB, downloaded the specified program, plugged the USB into the PC, it quickly listed the updates available. The States are in groups of 3, 4 or 5, while all of Canada is lumped together. I initially did the Canada update via Wi-FI and it took 50 minutes. Some of the State groupings will take as long. Not sure you want to keep the motor runnning that long. If ignition is simply in accessory mode, it will time out on you!
If you go USB route you have much more control over the process, Use a 32GB drive intended for level 2. Did not work for me with a larger drive intended for USB level 3.
USB method can be done while driving but system says not to turn motor off once started

To update maps in a 2018 or earlier model you need to order a new SD card. You will find details of the website through which a new card can be ordered on page 6-68 of your Nissan Connect manual. You can also order one through your Nissan dealer

Thank you for the information. But let me tell you what I will not be doing. For $100+? I will continue to use Waze! Lol

Agreed! The pricing from the Nissan vendor guarantees we use something else like Waze!

...and up here in the Great White North, we end up paying 35% more because of the FX rate. To add insult to injury, they also charge US$29 to ship that little ittyy bitty SD card to Canada!!

Makes sense. I will do my update via USB! Thanks!

In regards to how many times a year Tom Tom updates their devices, when I had mine I think it was 3 times a year for a very small fee. Now its free updates for life.

And you guys are getting those "dubious" updates for free? Serious question.

Yes, for my '19 map updates are free via USB (preferred method) or WiFi. If prior year models need an SD card, definitely not free.
