Can wheel bearings cause a rumbling noise?
I know it's probably impossible to answer, but there's a rumbling sound, possibly from the front of my 17 Maxima SL. It has about 33000km on the clock. I don't think it's the tyres, as it happens on both winters and all seasons. The sound varies slightly with vehicle speed and it's always there. I think it sounds like I'm constantly driving on a rumble strip. Could it be the wheel bearings, and if so, how many hours labour does it take to fix for one wheel? Thanks
You might want to check the wheel studs as well. I had a broken stud on my passenger side rear wheel that was only noticeable when I drove past a solid object or a jersey barrier. Inexpensive to fix but tricky to diagnose.
if you make a sudden turn one direction does the sound get quieter? Wheel bearing growling usually gets louder with speed and if you make a sudden turn and it gets quieter its usually wheel bearing. But hoisting it with a mechanic stethoscope is safest bet
