drilling for EGT

is there any possible way to drill my cattman Y for an EGT probe while its still on the car? the reason is that a bolt from the header is messed up and dont want to risk further problems by removing the Ypipe. I was thinking if I can drill the pipe right infront where it meets the cat? I have the ypipe wrapped in header wrap so maybe it will keep the exhaust temp up longer. how accurate do you think it will read if I probe it there? (about 5" in front of the cat)

Going that far back will give you lower readings and take much longer for the gauge to react when temps are increasing.

Mine is in the front leg just below the header and it was put on after the install. The only problem with this is that it just reads the front 3 cyl's not all 6 but I still think its the best compromise.

I had mine drilled while the y-pipe was still on the car. I had the probe place about an inch or two below the O2 sensor of the rear banks (closes to the driver).

Same here, I think having it there actually makes the readings more "in-range" for a regualr EGT. 'Cos even where the probe is right now I can pretty much come close to maxing it out. If you look at our header it is not that long anyway, with the probe behind first rear oxygen sensor you are only about 8 inches away from the exhaust ports on the head IMHO.

so if I drill it while on the car right near the o2 sensor, do I have to worry about metal shavings falling inside the pipe?

I took it to a muffler shop, the guy took a torch to it, then welded the bung to screw on the probe. Forgot to ask him if it was ok to leave the y-pipe on. But everything seems fine. ha..

Not near but after, try not to hit O2 sensor with a drill bit. It can take abuse but might mind a hole through it. When you drill shavings ussually go to the outside 'cos that's how the drill bit works. Some of it might blow into the cat but there shouldn't be any harm in that.
