random late night bored guy question

could someone explain to me why a turbo doesn't spool the same when in nuetral compared to when in gear?

because there is no load... and i cna't explain it past that, cuz i don't understand it myself... because you would think that the engine still breaths like it would when it's moving or under load right??

so all in all, anyone able to answer this???

exactly what i thought. i figured it would be putting out the same amount of exhaust so it would be able to spin the turbo just as well.

the only thing i could think of is possibly the engine no producing as much torque compared to when under load and somehow it doesn't put out as much exhaust. another though i had was when under load possibly the engine is forcing the exhaust out harder... i have no clue though.

because there is no load at idle, when you rev, you go through the rpm band very quickly - in a split second. under load, you spend a lot more time going through the rpm band, therefore making a lot more exhaust, which in turn spools the turbo

You will never make as much exhaust revving the engine up in neutral compared to accelerating in gear. The fuel consumption required to rev in neutral is next to nothing, for the reason sx7r gives, and it's the burning of fuel which significantly increases the volume of exhaust over what is drawn in through the intake.

Exactly. To get the engine to redline in neutral doesn't require you to press the pedal down much at all. The amount of exhaust that the engine produces is dependant on throttle application, not necessarily RPM.
