it'd have to be directly, otherwise how would the "retard individual cylinders" function work? If it was just tricking the ECU, it'd be alot easier to install as you wouldn't need to intercept ignition signals.

AFIAK the maxima ECU ignores the knock sensor at WOT.

It controls it directly.
