Broken belt

Last night the belt on my brothers supercharger broke. It was the stock pulley and belt. And he has had it for like 6 weeks. What is the common problem for the belts to brake.

Pulley misalignment is the most common reason for broken belts.

A slipping belt might also break prematurely due to heat and abrasion.

Within 6weeks it sounds like a misalignment problem...you need to find your problem and shim out the blower or shim one of the other pulleys or even your main pulley on your blower slightly towards your engine, to align everything...it will be a shoot and miss kind of thing till you finally find what lines everything up...

Do you guys look under the hood much? I have never had a belt just randomly break with no signs. Maybe your belt was loose and it hopped a rib on the sc pulley and you continued driving until it shreaded. Your sc will still work while belt has jumped a rib. I dont beleve in belts just suddenly breaking theory with no warning

If you can drive for 6 weeks the alignment cant be that off if any.

ok what happened is i let my brother drive my car, he took it on a road trip blasting the radio i'm sure and i'm sure he was driving it hard, i think the came loose theary makes sense, i about 3 weeks ago checked the belt and had to tighten it, so it is possible that it jumped and broke, my brother told me he saw the belt next to the pulley what was left of it but he kept driving, i could kill

I hardly ever drive with radio on in stop and go traffic. I have made the belt jump a rib by spinning wheels to much. 2.87/ 6 rib, thats right. $75 from vortech and about 5 business days. I down shift once from 5th to 4th (trying to slow down real fast) going 135mph, it jerked the belt so hard it started shreading instantly. That was such a dumb thing to do, rpm's went straight to redline. Try and get your self in the habit of looking under the hood atleast once a day to make sure the belt is on right. Just a quick peak can only do you good.

no I dont. I do know alot of people have a hard time finding the gatorback. I have always used the gates just because I dont take the time to find them either. Someone will soon drop the belt size for you.

If I'm not mistaken, Mustangs have an 8 rib crank pulley, so their SC pullies also have to be 8 rib.

I've noticed that the belt would jump if the engine hasn't warmed up enough, even with my washer shims in place. This happened once to me even during the hot summer. Best to drive around normally for a while to get the belt and engine up to normal operating temps before laying on the pedal.

ok today i got a break down of what the belt #'s mean for instance the gates belt

k060703
06=6 ribs and
0703=70.3 inches i think thats alot easiar way of understanding your belt size, now i a gator back you all rec, a 690 which would be 69 inches, from what i understand that would be 1.3 inches smaller than a gates belt. er aybe thats why the gatorback is better because it fits tighter... so with this theary i assume the proper gates belt for a 2.87 pulley would be a K060690. does that sound right?
