ptatohed's just-for-the-heck-of-it Cold Air Intake...

I had this old shop vac. tubing and attachment lying around so I decided to have some fun with it......

Nice, you should build a "cold air box" to go around the filter now.

This would be better than the CAI in the fender if you get this wrapped up in a box like it's being suggested.

I've done some ghetto stuff. Check out all my failed projects!

Then I coated with with underbody tar-based spray.

Then I bashed it up on a big dip in the road! I wasn't too pissed b/c the whole setup didn't work at all. The fact that you can route more air to your air filter works, in theory. But I did more than that. Like trapping ALL the air that goes into that inlet into a box. That doesn't work unless you are going over 80mph. But I did love the increase in power when was going 100+ mph.

Im building a much better version of what aaron did. The box will be about 3-5 times the frontal area so it should have a pretty good increse. Im making one for my 240 and max, and my buddy and I are going to do one for his ranger.

Aaron- how thick is that metal? My buddy and I are going to use some thin alu and weld it up. It looks like you used steel. any way cant wait to get started...

I got the cheap sheet metal at Home Depot. It's galvanized. I don't remember what guage it was. But it was easily bendable. But once it was fabbed up and rivited, it's VERY tough. It held up great at 100+mph speeds.

But one day, there was a large dip in the road. VERY large! When the inlet hit the pavement, it didn't hold up very well. So I got rid of the entire setup b/c the loss in power below 80mph was too much for me. You need to find a way to get PLENTY of air at low speeds. I would think a larger piece of inlet piping and a larger chamber might help.

Here are some links that originally gave me the tupperware/ram air idea:

Hey, this is Nick from Wisconsin i met you at maxus, i'm thinking of making a ram intake, but i'm skeptical of the performance gains, is it going to lean me out or make me run rich, I got a good look at yours at maxus and it got me to thinking of making one of fiberglass much like you see people make moulded stereo setups, essentially molding something from the lower air dams on the front...just wanted to see what you thought...Btw i'm loving the engine brace!

Hey Nick. I remember you. I'm glad you're liking the Engine Torque Link.

Doing a tupperware deal like I did several years shouldn't change your AFR. But, it will make it harder for the engine to suck in air at low speeds. I did notice a big power gain on the highway. But it simply did not work at low speeds and I ripped it all out.
