New Meats for the Streets
Got my new tires today. Really excited. Finally getting my SSR Comps out of the rafters of the garage and putting them back on a car. They haven't been used since my 96 was wrecked in Nov, 2004.
I got two Nitto NT555R Drag Radials sized 245-45-17 for the front, and two Hankook Ventus RS2s in 245-45-17 for the back. I'll probably swap them around front to back when I go on a long road trip, depending on how fast the DRs wear. I went with the Nitto DR because frankly it was the only one offered in a size that was appealing. The only other 17" size I could really consider was 225-50-17 in the BFG DR, and I didn't want a tire that skinny. I was trying to buy some 16x8" SSR comps and I was going to put some 255-50-16 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials on them, but that purchase didn't work out. Final cost for these was $572 w/ free shipping from Discount Tire ($12 for new valvestems included in that price).
I weighed both tires, and found out only that my bathroom scale is really imprecise lol. When I weighed the tires while holding them (and doing the subsequent math) both tires came in at 26lbs, though in one instance it showed that it was two lbs lighter, and then right after that an additional pound heavier. So because of this I weighed both tires a bunch of times each, and every other time both tires came in at 26lbs. Then I decided to weigh the tires by themselves without me on the scale. This time they both weighed 22lbs, over and over and over again - wtf. Documentation says the Ventus RS2 in this size is supposed to weigh 23.5lbs which is nice and light for a 245-45-17. I haven't looked up the weight of the DR.
Anyways enough babbling about boring things. Here are the pics. Sorry this thread is pointless but I'm just really excited to maybe be able to hook 2nd gear (maybe, not sure if it will dead hook 2nd gear or not, even if I drop the PSI down to like 15, I'm optimistic though) and also very excited to get my SSRs on the turbo car.

I don't drive this car in the rain so it's all good. If I do get stuck in the rain though the RS-2s will hopefully be on the front (long trips, otherwise I wouldn't be driving it unless the weather is nice).

Got the wheels and tires mounted and balanced today and put them on. I'm very impressed thus far with the Nitto DRs. I forgot my tire pressure gauge in my other car so when I was out testing them, I didn't know what pressure they were at. Keep in mind it was only 38-40 degrees out here, and it turns out the tires were at a whopping 39psi, not exactly optimal for drag radial traction.
Even in these far less than ideal conditions, I'm still liking the purchase. 1st gear I can still spin at will, BUT the spin is much more manageable, I can get traction and come up with a fairly decent launch by just throttling back to maybe 50%, whereas before even 25% throttle would just leave two black streaks on the asphalt - I was seeing about 10-10.5psi in first gear. Shifting to second gear they spin some on the shift and spin to about 4500-5000rpm (as the boost starts to come back on after the shift) but after that RPM it's hooked and I'm just gone - seeing about 11.5psi in 2nd gear. 3rd gear the scratch hard for a half of a second and then it's hooked and I'm seeing 11.5-12psi in 3rd gear. I didn't bother banging the shift to 4th because I'm already going 90mph at this point.
I'm VERY excited to see how they hook with a "normal" amount of pressure in them, like 30psi, and also at lowered pressure like 25, 20, or even 15psi where DRs really like to be run. Also very excited to get them on some pavement that is warmer than a refrigerator, it was cold out while I was taking pics. I never like to make numerical predictions but I'm very optimistic about launching the car at lower tire pressures and also higher ambient temps.
So here are the pics. I got a little carried away and took about 40 of em, since I haven't had these wheels on a car in about a year and a half. I was excited to be using them again.

I went out today and did some more practice at some lower tire pressures. I dropped it to 27psi cold. I still have to be careful not to spin the first two gears but if I launch correctly in first I can keep it scratching for traction the entire gear and then hit second and if I don't get them spinning too bad on the initial shift I can keep it scratching for traction in 2nd, makes for a pretty good launch.

Love the rims too! Ive got 255/45 Pilot Sports, and have been torn about those exact Nitto's. Please keep us updated on how they hold. My PS's cant even hold 3rd, especially when the road is cold. If I could put even 2/3 throttle down in 2nd gear my car would be allot more fun.
