Max is getting old.. Time to Boost :)

well guys the my max is about to click over to 150k miles. ive been looking into boosting the car for a long time, but with 150k miles i dont think it would be a good idea to boost such an old engine. So i plan to rebuild the max slowly over the winter. i have done a search but i still have a few questions that i thought could be answered in this section. So here we go...

1. What would be the suggested size turbo. For my driving i do about 75% highway and the rest is city. I would like to be see full bust at 3500-4000rpms.

2. Would i be able to bolt on the turbo to an engine that is out of the car then drop it in?

As of now those are my two major questions. im not a pro at this F/I stuff but ive read over the FAQs and read a bunch of thread in this section. so feel free to give a suggestion or conment. nothing will be taken to heart

Thanks,

Sean

I would get a compression check on the engine if you are that worried but I think if it is just an everyday driver I wouldn't worry about the mileage, that's just my opinion. If you were tracking/racing it then that would be a different story. Reread the dyno stickies to see what they were running and hp/tq range to get an idea of turbo (learning to read compressor maps is a must to meet your goals). I would also say getting Corky Bell's book "Maximum Boost" is a must as well to learn more about setups, what you need, and how it works as a system.

I would boost a 150K mile VQ30 in a heart beat if the compression was good.

The last motor I had in the **** BOX of DEATH was a junk yard motor with 120K and it didn't even have an oil pan when I picked it up. It ranlike a scalded dawg until the under drive pully timing ring milled through the timing chain cover.
Having gone through 2 motors this would be my advice. Turbo the high milage motor and get it running right, then do the swap. That way if it grenades, you were going to replace it any way. If you are going to do this though you need to make sure you have other means of transportation. When you hot rod a car things do go wrong, not always drasticly wrong, but definently "I don't want to mess with it today wrong."

Would a turbo with a Inlet-A/R .60 and Outlet-A/R .63 be ideal? just found a great deal on a Garrett T3/T4.

What you just said doesn't make any sense. Do you mean .60 A/R on the intake side and .63 on the exhaust side? with the exhaust side being a T3? If so that exhaust side is too small, that's a good sized turbo for a 2.0-2.5L. You also need to be concerned with and know the wheel trims.

You can do it yourself... based on that question though you have a ton of learning to do before you even think of turboing a car never meant to be turbocharged with a totally custom setup...

The worst thing ablout the the last blown motor was that I was cruzing across the dam at 60 HPM when the hole was made in the timing chain cover, and all the oil leaked out. But by God I drove the car on the roll back with the crank case almost bone dry. I love that POS car.

Well I'm jumping into the boost section head first. After I get my car back out of the paint shop I am getting a used V2 from my friend for $3,000 installed. I have an automatic so I am sticking with the stock pulley. The V2 COMES W/hks bov and intercooler (not sure if I need that but it looks good). My friend owns a boosted Supra, boosted GS 430, and boosted 95 Max. He does all his work and his cars are immaculate. So please feel free to give me some info on do's and don't for an automatic. It's my daily driver so I need to try to keep it as reliable as possible.

I can certainly relate.

My 96 SE now has 157k, and I am in the planning stages of setting up my turbo transformation.

As soon as I get to 15 posts, I will post a thread dedicated to my turbo project (yes, total post whoring here)....

You'll need a tranny cooler to help extend its life. I've got a B&M cooler on mine. Most of the guys here were surprised by the number of miles I accumulated before I needed a rebuild.

I already did look, the dude doesn't even know what it is, someone said it looks like a stock GN turbo. I don't know what a stock GN turbo looks like but I would definately not buy some turbo from some guy who doesn't even know what he has.

T25 is way too small of our engines. Read about what people on here are actually doing. T3/t4, T04, or GT35R are what most of the people are running on maximas. Read Corky Bell's "Maximum boost".
