new turbo desing idea, what size pipes?
Ok I got a new idea on how I may can do my turbo set up much like I did on my 3rd gen. Ok Im looking at the stock manifold and thinking I can cut on them a little and may them flow out the side of them. Im planning on running pipe from each manifold over to one pipe right before the turbo much like Tilley set up. Ok now after doing the 6 speed swap it make a nice path back by the fire wall that I think a 3 inch pipe will fit down through for the down pipe witch will end all under pipe clearence. Since no pipes will run under the car. It would make the first foot coming out of the down pipe steight also and would make overall exhaust shorter by a few feet as it would not have to go foward then back under the tranny.
This would also only have two foot all total feed pipes going to the turbo too. which should increase spool on larger turbo like I have. (hx35) And also I will
be able to steighten my pipe coming from the turbo to run steight across to intercooler.
Now my question is what size pipe would you use to go from manifold to turbo and what size would you use to join them right before turbo. Like 3 to 5 inches before. remember the pipe from manifold will be less than a foot long.
now here are some pics of my set up on my 3rd gen not very pretty but this is somewhat how it would be on the feed pipe and the down pipe and the intercooler pipe going to turbo would be much stieghter this time though. the turbo will be closer to the head light for the vq. their is a pic at the end of my current set up in the vq now

Im using 2.5". I dont know about 4th gear but in 3rd I see a full 15psi by 4500 on my t61 with a .70 housing. I have used 2.25 on the reverse setup I had, and spool wasn't terrible. 2.5" is very common and not very expensive so thats what I would use
its a mock up buddy, and honeslty i wouldnt hate on anyones turbo setup unless youve personally built your own. Ive attempted/attempting it, its a lot of work, and i give huge amounts of credit to the OP for trying out new stuff. How does the hx35 spool? I was thinking about going with the GT35R but that turbo alone is gunna knock me about almost 1000. add that to the total of the rest of the parts and in total not including install cuz im doing it myself, is about 3500.

the hx35 spools well. I had full boost (12)with a few leaks by 4000.thats in third gear.

Well progress is coming along. I could not mock up the rear stock manifold to get it to flow out of the side so I picked up some det manifolds. Im using the stock for the front bank and the det for the rear. I cut the det a little to change it to get it to point and fit the way I wanted it. The front one will just hit the water piping and the 6speed starter.
