My knock sensing device!!
Well I have been trying to figure out how to go about my timing. Considering im aiming for a reasonable amount of power and I dont have anything to tell me if my engine is knock, the damn EU dosnt want to accept any KS signal no matter what I set it too (very frustrating considering the skyline guys use it perfectly). So..... I did my own thing:
I learned that the honda guys make a so called "det can" basically a piece of copper tube, smashed shut at one end with a hole, and a bolt through it tightening on the block, then the open end gets a hose and hose goes into the cabin into ear muffs so you can hear your engine and knock.
I went with the electronic version, all my parts were from radioshack, got an amplifier (Those devices that allow you to listen like across the street conversations, etc..), steps were:
I opened up the device, unsolderd the mic, and solders a wire (pos and neg), I then soldered the other end of the wire to the mic (basically extending the mic from the actual device to the end of the line which will go on the engine) I then got the Mic and glued it on a clip (show in the pic below), covered it with hot glue, and wrapped it with elec tape.
You then basically put the clip anywhere on the engine you want to listen, for example the bolt of the KS, or somewhere on the actual block., it works great, you can hear everything. but it does get very loud as rpm's go up, even with the volume control on the device.
So i took another step, i found a 3.5 KS i had lying around, and put it in the place of the mic. So basically w/e sound or voltage the KS produces gets amplified by the device, and then feeds it into either earphones or a recording device.
I hooked up the device into my computer, using a sound editing software (free basic one), I then put the KS on the computers metal case, and tapped the case at a different location with a screw driver softly, to see how the KS responded. So far it works Awesome!!!! (At least indoors on the computer case). The sound curve is nice and smooth(quiet), then as soon as you tap the metal, you see a spike instantly, no other sounds are produced. I am going to hook this up to the car and see how it actually works.
I have read, that it is best to use a "flat response knock sensor" for this type of thing, but I have no idea how that works (knock sensors). I still have to do a good amount of research in the topic to really know wtf is going on.

I've been meaning to do this as well, it's some insurance for the motor for around $30. You should do a mini write up as to how you did through the pc I think that would be pretty accurate unless you know exactly what to listen for since there would be alot of other noises in the mix.

Once I test out the device, ill give more info and how I did it. if it dosnt work then no point in explaining lol

Im not sure about the sensor pins, but I can say for sure that the 4th gen KS harness only has one wire going down to the sensor. So as long as the sensors have the same resistance it should be fine (if my memory serves me right, it should be a 470ohm? correct me if Im wrong, Im at work and dont have the FSM on this comp)

Well the sensor plug itself has two wires sticking out of it and connected to both pins on the KS. Perhaps one wire gets canceld out within the harness, who knows. but the 3.5 harness/plug that goes into the KS, only uses one pin, the 2nd pin although its available on the sensor itself it does not get used.
Yea, i put the knock sensor on my computer case since its metal, to see wat i could hear when i tapped on the case, and all of a sudden with my finger touching the sensor, i heared voices, some argentinian tv/radio station, was mad weird and scary since it was like 2am lol.
