Turbo upgrade HX40 6-Blade (from the HX35)

As some may know the HX35 i have is out of efficiency, so today I upgraded to an HX40W 6-blade, 18cm^2 turbine. Did not do alot of driving since I do not have the muffler installed yet, and the turbo's outlet points straight to the tire so I dont know how unsafe that is. So far as for the short drive I did, there is alot more lag, very noticeable difference vs. the HX35. Ofcourse I have to do some tuning, so far the A/F got richer, so I have to lean it out pre-boost hopefully that improves the spool up a little bit, this was just a short 2nd gear WOT, so lets see how things go.

The turbos specs:
T3
18cm^2 turbing housing (probably around 1.00 A/R!!!!, from what I have read)
3.75" turbine outlet
Compressor:
60mm 6 Blade wheel - 69 lb/min

HX35 specs
12cm^2 turbine housing (aprox .63 A/R)
2.5" turbine outlet
Compressor:
I think 56mm, its an 8 blade - 52lb/min

Hope the HX40 despite its lag it can provide sufficient flow without running out of efficiency, I havent had the chance to look over the maps and calculate it. I am looking to produce 500whp minimum no more than 600whp with the torque converter unlocked.

Looks good! That turbo is good for 650-700whp.

Do you still have your hx35? You could put the hx35 exhaust wheel and housing on the hx40 to create a hx35/40 hybrid. It would help with spool up and, iirc, a hybrid will still make 600+ whp.

I was really thinking about that, i have two hx35's and the hx40, so I was thinking of putting together a hybrid, however I have done alot of research and read that the small 12cm hx35 housing will not be able to support the compressor of the hx40 and will be basically a choke in the system

Looking forward to see the results with this. Hopefully with that 3.5 lag shouldnt be toobad.

I finally have some real piping done for once, previously the pipe from the turbo to the muffler was a crushbent " 3" ", was basically almost down to 2.25 in reality, no good. So we did a bit of work moving the turbo to the side without the catback banging into the fuel tank, but it was success. we were able to fit a 3" mandrel bent pipe in there. It is raining right now, so I was not able to get any successful runs. I got on the gas a little bit and yeah there is definitely more lag, I dont think tuning the a/f a lil leaner before boost is going to do THAT much, but it might slightly help. It reminds me on how the T04b used to spool like, once it starts spinning boost shoots up really fast

I was able to get some video footage of how the turbo spools up, here you go, enjoy:

I just went for a couple of WOT 3rd gear runs, held 3rd gear from 50mph-60mph.

3K RPM - 0PSI.......................A/F 13's
3.5K RPM - 1.5PSI..................A/F mid 12's
4K RPM - 4.5PSI....................A/F mid 11's
4.5K RPM - 8.8PSI..................A/F high 10's
5K RPM - 13PSI FINALLY !.......A/F mid 11's
From 5K and up it stays at 13 - 13.5psi and a/f in mid 11's

so basically full boost at 5k in 3rd gear (auto).

The car didnt feel like it was accelerating too hard but when I looked down the speedometer was climibing so fast! was already at 120mph with just a few seconds, its crazy. Since boost comes in slowly you dont get a sudden rush of power, just a smooth transition.

I have a big dip in A/F as you can see at 4.5k RPM (10's A/F), I am going to lean this out to high 11's, also I am going to hook up my boost solenoid and close the WG till about 9psi. Hopefully with the leaning out of the dip, and closing the WG, spool up will be alot better and will get that 13psi further to the left of the RPM range.

Do you remember the convo we had about a smooth and broad tq band? it can feel slower and be faster and be slower and feel faster. Your car is faster than you think now get that thing on a dyno.

Yeah, I automatically thought about what you told me once I saw that 120mph lol. If I have time tomorrow im going to hook up the solenoid, I already leand out that dip on the laptop just gotta upload it.

Alvaro, man a 35shot would be so amazing right now! I am going to do everything possible to improve the spool up, but yes I am adding nitrous for sure.

I wouldnt bother with a 35 shot... 75 would be nice, turbo nitrous is magical **** ... frank and gaby(white t type ) run it the whole passs

Lets not forget that in a boosted app a smaller shot will net higher power numbers from its cooling as well.

Not only that but with methanol included, a nitrous should would actually make almost double its rated shot. so a 35shot plus the meth and boost, it would most likely yield more than 50hp

if you do spray, you can turn your meth down some also. At least when you plan to spray. I know im doing a 100 shot first stage and a 50 second on mine.

So I hooked up the solenoid, spool up is about 400RPM sooner, in 3rd gear auto that means alot! The torque and acceleration still feels smooth, but you can def feel more push in your seat, more like a constant acceleration, the higher the rpm the more you feel it accelerate. So I am happy, also since I now have the solenoid hooked up I cant drop the boost at the shift and make it easier for the tranny to shift, also less chance of wheel spin, the 2-3 shift is great, 2nd comes in hard then drops boost at same time its shifting then 3rd comes in and you get a huge pull, felt great.

So now the next thing, wait a month for school to end, to swap auto's. For now I am done, just going to cruise around.

You can make 550 on a hx35 all day with no problem try that first!
Dsm do over 500whp at 24 or so with the bulls eye housing
sr20's 400 at 20psi and 515whp at 26psi
So why not go make it with are 3.0L

Pressure my friend. The smaller motors are able to do it because you can create more pressure. its not the same on a larger motor. Also he isnt a 3.0 either.

Yeah the hx35 on our motors, even on the 3.0 is not efficient for those power levels. I have even had the hx35 max out my boost gauge at 20+psi and no power what so ever. at 10-12psi the hx35 is in its sweet spot anything above its just producing heat. Look at the compressor maps and plot it out, you'll see its not efficient. now the hx40 6-blade is another story, based on my math and compressor map I can take it upto 20psi and still be efficient

Perhaps the .5L extra makes a difference in how efficient the turbo is, also I have 8.8:1 compression (dont know if its relevant). I dont see any other reason why the hx35 didnt make more power at higher boost other than being out of efficiency, the power difference was extremely significant 20psi vs. 10psi (10 being more power), even A/F got really rich at 20psi which is a clear sign that there was no additional airflow being provided otherwise it would have leaned out. That has been my experience with the 35, I also have the least flowing compressor wheel of the hx35's (8-Blade), there is I think a 6blade hx35 that flows as much as the 8blade hx40.

or plan on reving it to 8000 with significant airflow up there to turn that compressor enough into an efficient island

U really think he is going to have trouble? His feed is short and has a quick spool. Has a hundred and fitty shot. It'll spool. Hell maybe better than your 40

Well if your comparing his and mine with him having a 100shot hell yeah his will spool faster than mine, dont really know how how much the quick spool valve will improve i kno it will.

Brian what turbine housing do you have, i briefly read they have 16cm for the hx52 is that true?

Dont be mad because you're the only one on this side of Miami still rocking a Maxima j/k lol. You have a bad *** car, you just need to clean it out! Every one of your vids from inside your car Im trying to listen to the engine/ turbo, and it's all cut off by all the crap inside your car rattling around! ARG!

And I still get on this forum to see what's the latest scoop on the VQs since I still get people PM'ing me with tuning questions or guys around here that heard that I can tune their AFCs bla bla. So it's good business practice lol. Plus it's always a bit nostalgic lol
