225 v.s 235

Hey guys i got the stock tires now and ready to change, my question how much different is the ride quality from 225/50 to 235/45. Is it even safe to go 235? A lot of folks have it here on the org but i was told that wide of a tire on the stock rim will cause premature / un-even wear. Please confirm for me.

235 on a stock rim is pushing it and u will prob not see any performance difference just less ride quality from the 225. i would not recomend 235's for stock rims.

From what I've read the .org seems to be somewhat undecided on the issue... some say it's okay and others say it's dangerous. If it's really that questionable I wouldn't take the risk.

The Tire & Rim Assosiation recommends that 235/45-17 tires should be mounted on 7.5-9" wide wheels.

You'd better go to Tire Rack or the mfg's website and look up the specs on the tire sizes you're considering. What the guys above are talking about is the heated debate about what sizes are "okay" to put on those 5th Gen 17x7" wheels.

With your 15" wheels it's a different ballgame because you're looking at a different wheel diameter and (should be) looking at taller tires. Since I'm not a 4th Gen expert I think your wheels are 6.5" wide (check!) and you're going to max out at 225/60 or something like that. 235/60 does exist, but who knows if that'll fit under there and selection is limited.

thanks, i know that our rims are different, and that most people say I should not go wider that 225 (and in all likelihood I will not), but I wanted to see/read some hard facts, rather than opinions, on what can or cannot/should not be done.

thanks!

depends on your driving style. If you're like most people and never go hard through the corners, 235 is likely to be overkill. You'll get lower fuel efficiency and probably louder road noise with 235 due to larger contact patch. Also, 235 is about $30/tire more expensive.

I had 225/40-18 and 235/40-18. I was taking turns liek whoa w/235. But ride was louder. Bumps didn't feel any worse.

Oh yeah, tires were mounted on 18x7.5. 235 should be on 8" wide rims tho...they were bulging on my 7.5, but @ least I wouldn't get curb rash!

In my scenario, 235/45-17 was $10 cheaper than 225/50-17 (OEM size) for Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. I probably should have went with OEM-size, but I felt like taking a risk and seeing how 235/45-17 performs. Pleased so far... I drive aggressively sometimes, but most of the time it's normal driving, maybe no more than 10MPH above the limit

BTW... what is curb rash? I've noticed my stock rims have accumulated more and more scratches/scrapes on the outer edge of the wheel... is that curb rash?

Yes. Usually cause by scraping against the curb when parking.

well, i have this chart from the Tire & Rim Assc that someone here sent me, it says that both 225/60/15 & 235/60/15 fall under the "recommended" category on the 6.5" rims. 235/60/15 are a bit (~2%) off on circumference, but that should not be much of a problem. 235/55/15, which are closer in circumference, fall under "permitted", but I don't want to stretch it that far....
