Break in period for tires?

Is there any break in period for tires because I just got new ones and my dad said I should take it easy the first thousand miles. I never heard of having to break in tires before.

The break in period for new tires is two full tanks of gas or about 500 miles, not 5 thousand miles.

Yeah I'd say just a few hundred miles too. Especially modern tire designs that have the injection molding "nibs" in between the tread blocks instead of all over the surface the way they used to do it. I haven't seen a "hairy" looking tire in a long time!
