Different tire size on the OEM 17 inch rim?
I purchased a set of Cooper Lifeliner SLE tires at my tireshop this Saturday. It cost me $663 with mounting, balancing and the tires themselves. However, the tire dealer tried to sell me tires that were 235/45/r17 size tires. I was very skeptical about the size since they were different fromt the stock OEM size of 225/50/r17. He also said that he has put those kinds of tires on maximas before with no problems. Would it be safe to use this size on a stock 17 inch rim? Would I notice any difference by using them?
On a positive point, the dealer has a much bigger selection of tires in the 235/45/r17 as opposed to the 225/50/r17 that were on my car. And funny thing is that the most of the 235 series tires were cheaper than the 225s he had in stock.
What does anyone make of this? Anyone running 235s on a stock 17 inch rims? Should I have gone that route?

Not a surprise that the tire dealer didn't have much in 225/50-17. That size is an oddball size and places like Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct even have a lousy selection.
I'm anxious to hear from people that have put the 235/45 on their OEM 17 wheel too. My RE92s are toast (no real surprise there) and I want to put something decent on the car and not spend a lot because it's a lease. There is much more available in the 235/45 size.
According to the tire size calculator, the overall height of the 235/45 is a little shorter than the oem size. On a stock vehicle, will the increased fenderwell gap be noticable?
Changing to a 235/50 seems to be a little closer to stock...but not as many tires are available in that size.
Thanks in advance..........
