buy 2 tires diff brand - bad?

My OEM tires are from Toyo. I plan to buy 2 tires from BF Goodrich instead of 4 tires. Is that bad to replace just 2 tires?

You're supposed to change tires out in full sets, and have rotated them so that they all wear out together, but I've driven cars with mismatching tires front to back for years without much problem unless I was doing something foolish...

How are the other 2 tires doing and what model BFG are you getting? I wouldn't try to make the tires too too different.

I rotated my tires late so now I rotate the front 2 tires to the back which are almost bald on the outer edges for the thread. I have 43k miles on these 4 tires. The 2 tires originally from the back are now on the front should last one more winter, I think. BJ tire center carries Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus and BFGoodrich Traction T/A for 4th gen stock size. I plan on buying tires from BJ because of its good tire policy. According to tirerack.com BFG Traction has higher ratings than MXV4+ and BGF Traction costs less than MXV4+ at BJ. what do you think?

you sould replace tires in sets. 2 sets of 2 or 1 set of 2. especially in the front. 2 things to remember when rotating tires. make sure you rotate them correctly, and some tires are directional. i dont rotate my tires. you dont really need to. they'll wear out the same eventually.

Hmm... the tires sound fine, but if the better tires are so worn that they're really only going to last one more season, would just bite the bullet and change them ALL out now rather than trying to cheap out. Tires that worn won't do you much good in the winter or snow, and increase your chances of hydroplaning or sliding around. You really need tread depth for any kind of snow or water performance, and it doesn't sound like you have much left.

The MXV4+ is probably more comfort and economy oriented, and the Traction T/A more performance oriented since the first one is a "touring" tire and the T/A a "performance" tire. The T/A is newer though, gets great reviews, and it sounds like you drive the car fairly hard (worn tread shoulders) so I'd be more inclined to go with that.

Joew, welcome anytime ... I'm also thinking abt Kumho ECSTA HP 716 tires. Among the Grand Touring tires, I guess they are the best bang for the buck. They are South Korean tires and have reasonable user ratings overall. Just for $44!! With both traction and temperature ratings as A unlike Goodyear Assurance Tripletred that has temp traction B. I'm just thinking how these goodyear tires will respond if I go on a longdrive driving for like 4 continuous hours ... will it suffer blowouts or sthg ...

regarding to low priced tires, some of tire prices on the market are pretty low, pepboys and autozone carries inexpensive line of tires. I was thinking. these tires must pass some kind of government safety standard which it should be fine to use, I think?

Performance and quality might be another thing, but I imagine that minimum quality standards would be part of getting DOT certification. Besides that, those tires are typically made by some large manufacturer and private-labelled for those guys. That doesn't mean that they're just as good as their name brand tires though.

I was reading the Sticky (don't know why it's a sticky! there is hardly any special info) on Falken Ziex 512 review and seems like the guy is hardly getting 20k usable miles on them while the warranty on them is for 50k miles. Can someone explain me if that 50k warranty gets him new tires if they become bald by 20k miles ?!? Thanks.
