Which tire pressure to use....

I just installed new tires this weekend and noticed that the maximum tire pressure (Pirelli PZero Nero M+S, 235/45/17) is 50 psi. I ran around 32 psi on the stock potenzias', but they were 44 psi max. I asked the guys that installed my tires and they really didnt have any good answers. So I just filled up to 36 psi all the way around. So far so good. So, my question: what tire pressure should I be setting my tires to?....or is around 36 a pretty safe bet. Thanks in advance

Do you go w/ the tire pressure that is listed on the tires or the one that is listed on the door jam (that has all the info about your car)?
