New Stock Tire option | Avon Tech M550 All Season

Hello all,

I'm not sure if this tire has been brought to the notice of my fellow orgers since I rarely come here now. But I wanted to share it anyway in case it hasn't. I recently decided to go back to using my stock 17's and was searching for a inexpensive yet good tire. I ran across the Avon Tech M550's on tire rack. Check it out http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

It's receiving great reviews and for $117 a pop and a 380 treadwear I couldn't resist. Well I had them installed over 2 weeks ago and have driven in this crazy snowy wonderland in NJ and so far these tires have been great in the snow, sleet, and rain. I am very satisfied so far and am pleased to see that we have another option to try out.

Avon is new to the US but have been around forever in the UK. Supposedly they make the tires for Bentely...

Has anyone else tried these out?

2,000 mile update

Yes thats still a short time but in those 2,000 miles I've driven through a handful of this crazy NorthEast weather. This winter has been especially brutal. I've also noticed that these tires are finally getting some exposure here so I figured I would chime in, as you can see no one cared about the original post

Snow - I was able to get around without much difficulty. The only couple of times I noticed the tire spin was when accelerating from a complete stop. It was icy that night so I feel all that A/S tires would have been the same. Overall they did well in the snow and ice when it came to stability and stopping. I passed up a few Maximas in the heavy snow and I'm sure they were left scratching their heads.

Rain - Amazing. It was a complete downpour here yesterday and I did a decent amount of driving in it. Not once did the tires hydroplane, no matter what speed I was driving. No spin during acceleration, no sliding in turns. Completely stable. I love there tires!

I cannot comment on the sidewall. I put these on my stockers in 225/50/17 which replaced my Sumitomo HTR + in 235/45/17 (on Tantrums) so it's hard to compare. The installer did say that the sidewalls are pretty stiff compared to what he's used to installing.

Previous tires on my Max are Potenzas, Falken FK451, and 2 sets of Sumi HTR+. The Avon Tech 550s are easily my favorite so far.

I hope the threadwear of 380 lives up to it's rating. If so then I think I might have found my tire of choice while driving the Max.

thanks for the review. my dealer gave me free tires for life, and im gonna haggle with them about putting the turanzas back on. ill pay extra if these are worth it.

did the recent snow we just had (which was excellent for snowballs but bad for driving) get caked in those tires and made them slick, or did the tires stay relatively clean? thats something i HATE about my turanzas, but im comparing them to rugged snow tires on my accord, so its not totally fair.

I'll be honest with you, I didn't notice any build up whatsoever and I'm the type that would always visually check my tires after stepping out of the car.

Thanks for the post. Just did some research at Tirerack and both the 500 and 550 seem to offer a valid option for the 225/50/17's we need. I'll be curious to see how they hold up - I'm leaning towards the Summer 500's since I have snows, but may chicken out and go with the 550 A/S for the better tread wear and anticipated lower road noise.
