purchasing online or in a store - which is better?
Quick question. Is it cheaper to order tires online, and find a shop to install them, or to order the tires and get the work done from the same shop?
If you order tires online you probably gonna pay more for the install, unless you ordering from a place like tires.com where you can purchase online and they will install at one of their locations. In a store you have a better chance of them not charging you a great deal to install because you are buying the tires directly from them... hope that helped
By tires online and have Walmart install them they charge $10 each tire that to take off old tire install new one and balance them... but they do charge $2.50 i think extra to dispose of the old tire.... Walmart is the cheapest on mounting tires!!!!
It depends, if you buy online, from somewhere on tirerack, you have to pay for shipping and handling which you don't if you buy in store but then that way your paying tax so it has a way of evening out. Typically, what I do is, I go to a tire dealer who will match tireracks price or at least come pretty close so that in the end, getting it through the dealer would be cheaper than ordering them through tirerack, paying shipping and handling, and then paying again for install at the tire dealership.
As others point out, some places will make you pay more for the install if you have them ordered in from online rather than get them through the store itself.

+1, purchased my first set of tires from tire-easy without a problem, now I purchased a new set from Discount Tire this time, they always have rebates.
also sometimes with online companies they may not offer the same road hazzard warranty as local places do. I work for a benz dealer and we always have people comparing our tire prices vs the online stores. we tell customers in the long run we will always be here to honor the warranty and the online places charge extra for a road hazzard warranty (on some tires).
Plus at least if you have a blow out on a thursday, the local place can try to get the tire the next day as opposed to waiting a few days for some place to ship them also

Online:
Shops:
That's basically my take on it. I have been paying slightly more or the same by buying them online but it is worth it to me because I can pick a shop with touchless mounting and get the tire i want. More running around, usually have to ship to house, put in car... schedule appt... etc etc.
- cheaper tires
- get the exact tire you want
- usually have to pay for road hazard
- can pick a shop that won't damage rim
Shops:
- hazard usually included, as well free rotation/balance... and mounting
- usually cheaper (my experience with three online tire purchases)
- limited tire selection
