advice needed on headers

I have my 3.5 ready to go in but I don't have headers yet. I won't be able to afford any for 2 or 3 months due to some unforeseen expenses.

Should I do the swap and do headers in 3 to 6 months or wait and do it all at once. I have shop access but I'm not sure how painful headers are with the motor already in.

Any experience and advice are welcome. I wouldn't ask but I'm really sick of this 3.0 when I have the new motor sitting there staring at me.

Much easier to do it all at once. Theres quite a few OBX ones available here used.

But since you got access to a garage and lift I would just put the motor in now since you never know what other expenses will pop up in those months to come....Good Luck though......

That's what I'm thinking. I would hate to just keep putting it off. Worst case ill just pay a budy to put em on when bills allow it. I want the $350 obx 5th gen ones on eBay. The equal length ish ones.

Headers are ridiculously easy to do without the motor in the car.

I'd say wait till maxus, no headers then just put in the motor and goto maxus!

My best friend is home in 5 weeks with a full bolt ons g35 and another friend just got his sr20 and rb20 240's running. I wanna make a decent showing that week at the track. Too many low/mid 8 sec cars for my slow 9.6 self.

If you are getting OBX headers, does it even matter?

The rear header is part of the ypipe so can you install the motor with the rear header/ypipe in? I guess you could maneuver it in but im not 100% sure.

For the A32 (OBX 3.5 headers), its do-able but xmember has to drop, power steering pump has to come out for maneuverability, and the rear motor mount cover has to be grinded off on the top. Maybe that can give you an idea.

would it be a mistake to take the easy way out and get shorties>? I already have a Budget Y.... I know the sound wont be as nice but im keeping it quiet anyway. Are shorties "that" much better than the stock 4th gen manifold?

I'd drop the motor in now have your fun for 3 months then install the headers. I installed long tube headers for the first time 2 days ago and it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. We dropped the crossmember, dropped the motor down, installed the headers then bolted everything back up. It took us less than an hour.

I would think the biggest problem would come from old, rusty fasteners, but if the OP just changed the motor, nothing should be seized. Or, at least, the fasteners could be unsiezed while the motor is still on the stand. I agree, drop it in and have some fun, and add the headers when you get them. It will also give you a good way to quantify the power the headers add.

So wait for long/midlength and use 3.0 manifolds for now seems to be the concensus. If that's the case its just motor mounts and oils . Maybe a new friction plate for the fidanza. I may start a progress thread if I have time.
