Advancing Timing

Can that raise the rpms at which the car changes gears due to a higher timing?? And Everymorning I hear a tat tat tat or basically Pinging on my engine for like a couple of seconds and then the car I guess adjusts or goes away. I know that happens when there is more Air than fuel and the engine is combusting without the right amount of fuel but what could be causing this Prob? I know everything is in Tact and I dont know if the guys actually checked my timing correctly while I had my engine rebuilt because while I was there he did the timing by turning on the car and turning the distributor until the car sounded stable and that was it. I didnt see him get out a timing gun or anything. So this is the reason why I ask my Questions. Please answer all thanks!!

Re: Advancing Timing

That isn't the proper way to adjust the timing. As IIRC (I remember quite well too ) the connector to the idle up soleniod is removed while the engine is off and at normal operating temp. Then the car is started, held at 2000rpm for 1-2min then its raced 3 times over 3k to lock in the timing. In order to set the timing the idle has to be at 700-800rpm the stock tach is off, so aim the tach for slightly below the indicated 750rpm line. I think close to 2/3 would be better. Then you use the timing gun and set the base timing and idle. I know for a fact that our owners manual recommends 91 RON or at minumim fuel that has a ATK of 87. My car would ping with 87-89 gas on a hot day or with AC + passengers. Try running 91+ or better.

that's not pinging

That ticking is the sound of your lifters before they fill back up with oil. As they get older, they hold oil for a shorter period of time after turning the engine off. Then at start, they tick till they pump back up.

It's really nothing to worry about though..
