which 2nd gen should i get?
i've been doing research for some time and decided that i want a 2nd gen Maxima with a 5speed manual. However, i want to know if there is any particular model and/or model year that is better than the others, and what to look out for when buying one. Im already aware of the injector problem and im a fairly accomplished mechanic (so i have a clue) and have had 3 cars('85 sentra, '86 toyo pickup, '78 f-150) aready even though im only 17 (i didnt wreck any of them if yer wondrin). They were all bad choices: the sentra dindnt run, the toyo was hit bad on the front drivers side, and the f-150 was from new New Jersey(salt), was abused, and the mechanic who worked on it didnt have a clue. Example: the carburator bowl breather was plugged with a screw, the auto tranny had parts in it backwards, etc. So this time i want to get something i can keep for a while. I only have a budget of around $2000. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is my
first time posting and i hope i did it right.

Partly the reason for the maxima is it wont cost me fortune on insurance
and the maxima has what im lookin for. insurance on my current truck is only $450 annualy, i dont want it to be like $1500. u rarely see teens driving them. they dont like them cuz there old and boxy. thats one of thereasons i like them! I also dont need a sports car, itz nice but the maxima delivers plenty of pickup. much better than my parents 97 cvic
which is horrendously slow and delivers barely 100hp.

hmmm, if anything, I will probably look into the 88 vintage SE 5-speed. They would probably be the best product of the generation in my opinion. If not that, the other option to look into is the 86 SE. Since the 2nd gen came in 2 styles, the 88 was the second syling, and the 86 with the last of the original 2nd gen style. Either are very good cars. If you can try to see if you can find low mileage ones. You'd be surprise how many are below 100k miles (I've seen some on ebay that used to be owned by elderly couples). Good luck with your search.

Thanks! unfortunately im going to have to wait for a while 'cause i have to fix and sell my truck. I also would like to know how the accesories and power options (a/c,sunroof,power steering/locks/windows,etc) hold up. Im especially intersted in the sonar suspension and how well it holds up over time. It is suprising to know that most cars these days dont even have it as an option and only some high end luxury cars have it.
