Superchagred 2nd Gen?

I was wondering if any one has ever supercharged a 2nd Gen Max? I've seen some things on turbo's on the second gen's, but nothing about superchargers.

Has any one seen the Supercharged Frontier(sp?)? One of my friend's dads has one, and when I looked at the engine, it strongly resembled a VG30E (not a VG30DE). If that engine is a VG30E, then I was thinking it's possible to take a supercharger from one of those and put it on a Maxima.

Any Idea's on this, anyone?

It's because it is a VG. VG33ER. Only problem you might have is hood clearance with that style supercharger.

Hmmm.... Well, the intake manifold on my VG is kinda high, so it may be the same height. But a little hood modification wouldnt hurt, might make the car look meaner too.

So will the stock VG30E in the second gens handle the boost from a supercharger like this?

And how much power gain would I get from this?

no clue but if you wanna do this i would get the hood spoiler from a 200sx like an late 80 model cut a hole in your hood and bolt that baby on..

I dont know , Im thinking about trying to see if it would be direct bolt on , And what else i would need , And maybe i might go pick one up and try it...

The V6 2001 frontier with the s/c on is 210 HP @ 4,800 rpm; 246 ft lb

And the V6 1999 frontier 143 HP @ 5,200 rpm; 154 ft lb

So im thinking maybe a 50 hp increase?

Uh where did you get the numbers at for the pathy? That should be 180hp.

You'll get similar numbers, but I err to being slightly lower because of plumbing.

BTW, please respond to my PM. Thanks.

I've been putting alot of thought into this. Im about to put some time aside to research this. A guy at the local nissan dealers parts dept, told me that the VG30E and VG33E had basically the same intake bolt pattern, so it would basically bolt on. He also told me it would be alot for a brand new OEM supercharger, probably $600+.

This summer I should have plenty of time to do this, So I will try to give it a shot. I might also try to locate a VG33ER from some salvage dealers, cause my current engine needs a bit of work.

From what my friend told me, that fronter was about 200 HP, which is around 50 HP more than the VG30E.

What other engine mods would go well with a supercharger? High Comp pistons? Would it be possible to push over 300 HP with the supercharger and a few internal engine mods?

Keep in mind that part of that extra 50hp is because of the .3 L of extra displacement in the VG33. The other issue you run into is the fact that the factory M62 eaton superchargers are not very efficient and rather small. If I recall correctly, they are only good to about 250hp, maybe slightly more, and there are many reliability horror stories with eaton. And as for the high comp pistons, bad idea with boost. Many would consider 9.0:1 too high and that is stock on the maxima.
Just things to consider, but if you decide to do it, that would be awesome

I would stay away from the high compression pistons for sure. However I don't think you neccessarily need to lower the compression...but as long as your don't plan to go much over 14psi of boost...anything higher then I would say lower compression is indeed required.

As for comparison, the stock S/C on a frontier gained only 30hp over stock. .3l was good for about 20-28hp over the VG30E. If you do go roots you should think of something bigger....there was a guy that did it with an M90 on a 4th gen....too bad the car was totalled before we saw what that gained.

But here is another though....since you will have to do some pulley reworking...why not go with a centrifugal s/c instead? You don't boost like a roots, but I guarantee that it's far easier on the motor then roots or turbo because you don't make max boost until redline. There are some good gains to have there too.

Are there any other types of superchargers, like any that dont bolt up directly to the heads? I think I saw an ATI supercharger for the 350Z that used the stock intake manifold. Would one of these work on the VG30E? The new Stillen Superchargers for the 350Z/G35 are awsome, but they wont bolt up to a VG30, only a VQ I figure. But those are a bit on the pricey side, but for a nice +100 HP boost on a VQ35 it seems worth it.

The one reason that Im considering a supercharger over a turbo, is the instant power boost, unlike turbos, which have to spool up for the power boost to come into effect. Plus i'd probably be the first 2nd gen with a SC.

I'm not sure...that would just be a bunch of researching. You do realize that your comment isn't true about all superchargers.

The VG33 supercharger is the only one that remotely could bolt to our car. The only other option would be the custom route by somehow fabricating a mount and belt system for a centrifugal SC. I've seen it done once on a z31, and the best place to locate the SC is where the AC compressor goes, but that is serious fabricating work for piping and mounting.

And as for your statement about instant power, if you size the turbo right, you won't have that issue. If you get a T3/T4 hybrid turbo sized properly, you have headroom for much more than a SC will ever be good for and full boost by 2700-3000rpm. Just something else to consider.

And in case you were wondering, here is a little more info on the SC'd z31, just to give you an idea on the custom work involved.
