thinking about buying a 88 Max

Saw a 88 Max at the dealership but they are asking nearly 5k for it, I think it's a rip off and severly overpriced. here's the 411 on it, it's a 88 SE 5spd with electronic adjustable suspension and i noticed the plugs to the struts are disconnected, it's in very good shape but the hood is a bit off, according to carfax, it's one owner never been in an accident, i doubt carfax accuracy. Last thing it's white and it look like it was painted, since there were some white powdery overspray by the fender well. What do you think, and I definitelyo know I'm not going to pay at price, any suggestion and comment are welcome

dealers will alway over price the car no matter wat.. the most ive seen a 2nd gen maxima go at a dealer is 3500 and it was in perfect shape... as for the suspention adjusters being unpluged, most likely the swaped out the adjustibale shokes with som standerd maxima shoks. if so the value goes lower... sumtimes the dealer gives the cars tuch up on the paint thats wat the spray might be... but no 5 g's is way to much you can get a clean 3 gen or even a 4th gen for 5 grand .... on a side note never buy a early 90's car at a dealer..

if it was a clean JDM RHD i would pay $5000 for a 2nd gen, but $5000 for a LHD with a few problems is alot. you can get 5th gens, even 6spd for $5000 or under now (though anything newer than 3rd gens fails )

i cant find the ad because i think someone bought it, but there was a 2nd gen by me, 80k kilometers (about 50k miles), no rust (seriously looked showroom new), and old person owned that cant drive anymore or something, so you know it was garaged 5 days of the week and never driven at anything faster than city speeds. $1200 obo

I think $5000 is wayyy too much for a second gen maxima! You can literally find them for much less than $1000 these days. Im looking to buy one myself. Ive ran across several. One lady wanted $600 for one with a bad fuel pump. It was an 88 SE and really clean only had 140,000 miles on it. I actually owned one that I bought for $550. It was an 87 GXE fully loaded! It was extremely reliable even though I bought it at 165,000 miles and had to replace the power steering pressure hose as Soon as I got it, but hey for $550 you cant beat that!

i agree, since I walked away, even though my attempt to make an offer, they say they are losing money if i offer, I was like bull****, that car is A: 23 yrs old, B: it has some work need and C: what been maintained? and lastly it's OLD. So I ended up walking away and I find out later they didn't sell it so they sold it off to a wholesaler since they coudn't get it sold, hence, it's OVERPRICED!!!!

Yeah Good choice! Like someone else said you can get a 5th generation for 5grand. Ive seen lots of nice 3rd 4th and 5th gen maximas for $5000 or less. Lots of them come with mods and are maintained pretty well. I wouldnt pay more than 1,000 tops for a decent 2nd gen. Ive ran across a guy wanting to sell an 86 max 5-speed for $300 just needed a clutch! I own a 3rd gen GXE, But I miss my 87 GXE that used to have that voice activated system in it, and the seats were so comfortable. It didnt have A/C but the heat felt hot like fire, and I never had a problem with the windows going up or down. Thas why im looking for another one in ok condition for a daily driver perhaps or a project car now since I have advanced my mechanical skills.
