Power steering leakage

Yo...The past couple of days...I had been hearing this squeaking...and checked it this morning...turns out my power steering fluid leaked out and was all on passenger side of the engine compartment. I'm thinking that it is a bad hose but I'm not sure. What do you guys think it might be? Should I just change the hoses anyway? I'm figuring so...

You definitely want to check the hoses first but...

it could also be the power steering pump. Mine went out and somehow it would cause the power steering fluid to be forced out of the power steering fluid reservoir. I would be losing fluid but it was not due to a leak in the hoses. I got a power steering pump off a GXE from the salvage yard for $56.00 and replaced it. Did the replacement myself. It was a messy job but otherwise pretty straight forward. Just have a FSM or some other manual with you before you start because one of the bolts you have to remove cannot be seen, you have to do by feel.

Good luck

Mine is leaking throught the upper pressure hose. Its the one that comes up and has a circular metal piece on the ends of it. Its about $35 from AutoZone, and I havent tried replacing it yet. I'll let you know how it is when I try the replace it. The top end is easy, but the bottom cant be seen very well.

I replaced the power steering pressure hose. which is located towards the fire wall on the passenger side by the power steering resivoir for the fluid. I think it has a brass fiting stock (mine is silver since i replaced it)

Last week noticed some loud noises when turning the wheel. Power steering hose leaking and leaked out onto the passenger side firewall. This is the hose that you can see up top. Banjo bolt with spongy sleeving and heat shield towards the bottom half. Friggin hose was $170 That bottom bolts a pain to reach let alone try and get a wrench on.

Thats the one. Although Its $35 at AutoZone. Do you have to bleed the system? I can imagine that PSF would go everywhere once you take off the hose.

$170??? where did you get your hose from? you got raped! i think but not 100% sure but i think i put a bucket under the bottom hose when i took that off so it drained into the bucket. i took the bottom hose off first!

My car leaked fluid for a while... not real fast, just a couple drips a day. When I sent it to the shop it turned out to be the pump which turned into a $450 job Has anyone paid that much to get it replaced?

I did mine last week. Got the $35.00 silver one at Autozone. After doing the replacement, I get noise from the pump. I tried the bleed procedure in the Haynes to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe dirt in the pump? How do I purge?

I also had my high power steering hose go, and it was also around $170 to replace with an OEM hose. I wish I had known about an AutoZone one that fits too!

EDIT: found the service record, it was $170 including labor, the hose was like $120 for me OEM.

High Pressure hose...

...yeah, I had my high-pressure hose replaced about 6mos ago. I got the hose from AutoZone for about $35.00 and had a mechanic replace it. He charged me $40. The bolt that holds the hose in place, I was told, required the use of a special wrench to remove. I haven't had any leaking since this was done, but I have started to notice noises during steering. Don't know why.

Yeah, I have the same problem with noises ( groans ) since I had the pwoer steering hose replaced. The pump did not run dry. What is causing the noise and is it serious ??

Re: Power steering leakage

when my power steering thingy broke - i was hysterically crying! (but that's cause it was an ABSOLUTELY awful noise and i thought my baby girl was going to die!) but after i got it towed to the shop she was better! BUT ANYWAY it my problem was that it was leaking (and it leaked everywhere) and because i let it go so long - it was one night, but it was 1 night driving 200 miles back home and it started before my journey home - it got really bad and made everything else worse. so whatever it may be, i hope you get it fixed REALLY soon or you'll end up having the $800 bill that i had cause i ruined the whole power steering thing. either that or i just got incredibly cheated outta $$. good luck!

Thanks for the warning. Think I'll have someone qualified to look at it.

Autozone Part Number

Does anyone know the part number for the high pressure hose from Autozone? Ive needed to replace mine for a while and didn't realize it would only be $35. I looked on there website for the part and I couldnt find it, so if someone could supply me with the part number it would certainly simplify my search. Thanks guys!

I am assuming I need the same. My wife works in the service dept. at a Saturn dealer, so I trust the mechanics there. When I sent my whip in there to have them look at it, they said I needed a power steering part (don't remember which one) to fix the leak. They said Nissan wanted $180. I guess it is the same part. If anyone can give me the part number for the one at Autozone, I can get this prob. fixed ASAP. Thanks in advance.

Looking for product

Someone mentioned a product that Autozone sells that stops the PS pump from making noise after changing the hose. Anyone know what it is? My search came up fruitless.
