Why a VE knock sensor goes bad

Check out this corrosion I found! If you look closely, above the left terminal on the sensor, there is a white dot. Right through the dot is a crack. There was also another crack along the side of the sensor. Knock sensors should be considered regular maintenance items just like an oxygen sensor. Mine never sent a code but you can bet that corrosion sure didn't help things.

The new one is in and it's running, but I only drove it the 2 miles home and didn't have a chance to really test it. I wanted to make sure all the gaskets were sealing too before I got on it. Overall impressions are good, seems like the torque band has fattened up across the rev range.

I'll report later about whether it worked to fix the "heat soak" problem. I'll also be doing a write up on how to replace this. Overall it wasn't anything extremely difficult, just time consuming and tedious in parts.

Yup, original one off my 93 VE with 134K. The boot on the wiring harness has long since cracked and exposed the back of the connection to the elements, which caused this corrosion of the terminals. It seeps in through the back, which happens with every connection that looks like this (like VTC solenoids and water temp sensor to name a few). All of these connections I've found have had corrosion on them.

By the way, I don't think knock sensors are specific for any engine. It's probably the same exact part number on a VQ than it is on a VE or VG. Don't quote me though!

Naw there are a few different ones. But in that don't look like the one for the 91-94 ve. It looks like the one for the 95-99. Where was it located on the engine, under the plenum or under the manifold?

Well I'm pretty sure it's the correct one sincet he new one looks exactly like it. Does yours look different? Here's where it's located, under both the plenum AND manifold.

Take plenty of pictures if you plan on doing a write up. I'm sure many people would appreciate it around here.

I haven't changed min yet, but it looks like the one the parts store gave me was wrong. Good thing i didn't get it tore down and find out. You know what sux? On the 95-99 you can get to that ***** without taking off the intake manifold. I still think you could mount that thing somwhere else and it would work fine.

Might as well get an OEM Nissan one. I wouldn't trust a parts store part for something that hard to replace. Get a new subharness too (about $15).
