I have a ticking noise that I believe is VTC failure. However, this ticking does go 'silent' when I depress and hold down the clutch pedal, only to return when I release the clutch.

I have read the VTC in the 3rd gen FAQ as well as Craig's and 4dsc.com's info, and am ready to ground the VTC's if you guys can help me tell if it is definitely the VTC's. Thanks!

 

sounds like input shaft bearings on the tranny. VTC failure is internal to the engine. this is definitely a tranny/clutch problem.

 

What's the best/cheapest way to find out this is a tranny/clutch problem? Is there more info in the .org FAQ's for 3rd gen's for this type of problem? I would like to attempt to diagnose (and even fix myself) if possible because I have not found a good mechanic in Houston,TX that I trust with my Maxima in the 9 yrs that I have owned it.
