question on buying a maxima

hello, close to my house a guy is selling a 92 maxima limited edition 5 speed. it has a new DOHC motor which im guesing is the VE motor with 67k miles and a new transmission with 57k miles. the odometer reads 196k miles. it seems to be in good shape except for a few things. one problem is that it hesitates. he took it to a mechanic and the mechanic said is was probably the spark plug wires. also, the A/C doesnt work, and the back right window doesnt go up or down.
He is selling it as is for 2,500 dollars and is throwing in a new muffler also. He has had the car since January 2003.
As you can see, im new to maximas, and im interested in a 5 speed maxima with the VE motor, but does this sound like a good buy?

the only thing im worried about is that the hesitation could be something expensive to fix if its not the spark cables.

There are several possibilities on the hesitation. Phast's MAF replacement is one solution. Fuel injectors are another, Cam Position Sensor is another and Throttle Position Sensor is yet another. They are all kind of expensive, but it should be just one of them and it is a one-time cost that should last the rest of time you own the car.

Air conditioning is tough to tell. Could be the compressor, or a leak somewhere.

It is still a good deal. Do your VTC's tick at all? That's something that irritates the BLEEP out of me and I can't afford to fix it.

The window regulator for the back window you can do yourself. Part is about $60. Look at the 3rd Gen FAQs for a good "how-to" on them.

Good luck.

well, i just got back from test driving it, and heres how it is:
at first we opened the hood and the motor seemed to run nice and smooth, i didnt hear any knocking or tapping. then he revved it while it was in neutral and the motor seemed to shake and blue smoke came out either the valve cover or cylinder head gasket (think it was the valve cover , but didnt look too closely). then we went for a drive. when you give it gas, it seems to shake, kind of like when you push the brakes on some cars and the steering wheel shakes and the pedals shake. it was not very powerful at all because of this. it shifted nice and smooth and everything else was good. then my mom drove it while we stood outside, and when she drove off , i could see blue smoke that came from either the tailpipe or under the car somewhere, and when she got back, i could smell what seemed to be burned oil.
he says it is the spark plug wires that need replacement, and that it should run fine after that. could it have more of a problem that just the wires?

I would stay away from this car. It is a money pit. They do not have wires in the first place...they have coils over each spark plug.

The salesman is just trying to sell you a piece of junk by saying its just a plug wire. If it was just a plug wire he would replace it himself.

I do not believe it has a new motor if it is running like it is and burning oil like it is.

I repeat do not buy this car unless you feel like rebuilding the engine because of the oil usage (blue smoke) The best case it would be valve stem seals but why take a chance.

Good luck with it but I wouldnt get it. I would keep shopping.

Thats what i was thinking, but its a private owner , and he was pointing to the wires that lead to the coils. I dont see why a simple wire would cause this wierd shake/hesitation.

Run........run away fast. Things just don't seem right with this guy. There are plenty other Maxima's out there. I bought my 92 se 5spd last year with 113k for 2k. The car was from texas, was dealer serviced, spotless inside and out, came w/ Pirelli's and a Kenwood head unit. There are deals out there, they just take a little work to find
