Just as a quick warning to any people in Australia reading this thread, our laws are very different and the Highway Patrol guys (otherwise known as revenue-raising trained scum) have far more sensitive radar detector detectors. Use ANY detector from the US and you're guaranteed to be sniffed out from up to 1km away.
If you are hell bent on getting a detector though, get the Australian made Whistler (not to be confused with the American product of the same name) which is made with Australian conditions in mind. For laser, the Laser Echo rules for its concealability but in Queensland will have your car towed away when they see Error 7 flash on their screens. That's where the Escort ZR7 is the best option for jamming laser, but cannot be hidden as easily and will still probably have you booked in that state (it's a bit more draconian up there than any other state in Australia). There's no point in getting a laser detector only as the laser guns obtain readings in 0.3s even though the police are required by law to obtain a 3s average reading (and we all know just how honest HWP guys are here).

Can someone answer this?
Also, does the v1 only fit on the windshield? I hate having anything on the windshield, the radar detector I have now is small enough to fit in the space underneath the ashtray.

hey i read your story and im 99.99% sure that the cop car that blew past you and sounded like a monster had a LT1 or maybe even a LS1 engine in it. If you dont know the LT1 and the LS1 are used in camaros and trans ams. Also i watch this cop video of a stolen M3 on a chase and they had to bring in the LT1 cop car and it kept right up with the M3 so Im pretty sure that cops have some of these special cars for when they get into a high speed car chase.

my previous detector was a BEL 880, while it was good for the $100 i paid for it, my new passport8500 completely blows it away. the only thing i am missing are the arrows like the V1 but i guess you could say i speed responsibly so the arrows are just because i'm curious.
its been said before but i'm saying it again, if you know how/when/where to speed then you will not get a ticket (if even pulled over) so dont think that because you have a radar you can go as fast as you want and not get caught..instant-on puts a big damper on highway blasts late at night..and never speed alone, especially at night.

I can't believe the number of people I see with radar detectors in there car mounted in ways that severly limit it's effectiveness. I see them lying on the dash, pointed down towards the cowl of the car. I see some halfway up the windshield and pointing straight up at the noon sun.
I don't get it. You spend the money and take the time to actually put it in your car. Why not take the time to set it up so it will work, and work to it's maximum? It needs to point front to back and have clear, onubstruted views both front and rear. It should be mounted as high and to the left on your windshield as possible. This gives you as much frontal advance warning as possible. But I find that the best compromise is a spot right underneath the windshield mirror. You are assured of clear front and rear vision and your eye is (or SHOULD be) going there often anyways.

i have gotten 5 ticks in tha last 2 months 4 for speeding 1 on radar and like stated before theres no radar detector thats going to save you from instant on at 2 in the morning and unmarked cars or paddy wagons pacing you i know from experiance i got one last night, unmarked paced me at 99 in a 55 very solid another wedsday night instant on 87 in at 55 goihg the oppisite way in the same area lett just say i am not travling that way to a friends house any more.
anyway what is so much better about the v1 or 8500. is the distance that much greater or is it just all the features like where its coming from because my 916 works very well just not in the situations i have been having

As far as not driving fast late at night and instant on....
If you PAY ATTENTION to your radar detector you will very often get indications of instant on from cars out of sight but further up the road getting bathed in the radar glow.
Here's ANOTHER reason to buy a V1. Resale value. I thought I had lost my Gen1 V1 early this year. I immediately ordered another and was pleased to find that I got a Gen2 for the same money. About one week later I FOUND my old V1. I put it up on eBay and sold it for $350 in just a couple days.
And yes, there is NO way for a radar detector to defend against pacing or VASCAR. That's up to the driver.
Also, old V1's can be updated to the latest specs, so they never become truly obsolete.

Read the freaking manual! It will say in there that ANY metal between you and the radar will cut the signal. If you don't like things on the windshield then start to like tickets or drive the speed limit.

I have to agree with davebond. I moved to Dallas about 5 years ago, and I cannot believe the way some of these people drive....I guarantee that cars sold in Texas DO NOT come with turn signals..I have seen some of the craziest, stupidest s**t on the roads here, and I have been driving for almost 20 yrs.
Anyway, before I get all of the rebuttals here, let me be clear- I don't advocate driving too slow, either. That can cause problems as well. I usually go faster than the speed limit, just like most people do. I am also not trying to tell anyone else how to drive, but I will say this- just because you yourself may be a good driver, doesn't mean it's OK to cut people off, etc...just think about it, is all I am saying. OK, this is me, stepping down off the soapbox..

I agree with davebond007. I never was a fast driver to begin with but I have definitly slowed down with my second ticket in 5 years. It isn't the fact that I don't think I can handle it, or that I'm afraid of getting caught. I don't do it because I wouldn't want to cause an accident when I'm breaking the speed limit and be held for vehicular manslaughter. Be smart and go with the flow of traffic.
I can't stand it when a couple of stupid guy's fly in and out of lanes thinking they are all that and a bag of chips. Daggonit, these are passenger cars on the road that carry kids, dogs, and old people and by acting stupid your stupid actions could affect a lot more then yourselves. Grow up and save the excessive speeding for the race track.

i agree with adamis.
i am an avid speeder, believe me. but i have sobered up lately to the awareness of others on the roads. i do not own the road. yes. i drive that way at times because it is addicting and thrilling. but i have curbed my habits a lot these past weeks. i have been reading articles on speeding and the info is in the air or something. sport compact car has a cover feature about speeding this month. i have been seeing too many "signs."
i'm slowing down.
but only in moderation!

I have a Passport 8500 and I have yet to get a ticket with it. It's served me well. I really couldn't justify dropping an extra $100 for a V1 and the arrows, to me, are useless cause the way I drive, if I hear or see the indicator go off I slow down and keep my eyes pealed and I usually spot the cop within a few seconds. Plus, I don't really know how reliable those arrows really are. I say it's a toss up between the high end Bel's, the 8500, and the V1.
