Steering noise and intermitant loss of power

My 90 SE has been making noise while steering. It's not quite a squeal but more like a high pitched gringing noise. When making noise the power for the steering generally disappears. This will happen when turning the wheels a little or a lot but it is not a continuous problem.
The resevoir is full, there are no leaks, and the belt is in good shape and seems to be tight enough.
Can anyone offer any help diagnosing this problem.

check your CV axles

Thanks for the input but the CV axles are 6 months old. I hope that is not the problem.
The sound that is being made doesn't seem to be coming from axles.
My best guess is the pump or steering gear.
