Lately when starting the car on some cold mornings, I get a ticking sound (sounds like its coming from the cams) until the engine warms up? Any ideas?

I'm no pro, but seeing as how no one's offering advice....

1) Could be the exhaust manifold studs that have broken and are just rattling. To fix, you need to drill them out and replace. The dealers will charge a lot for this since the labor is high I guess. A very common problem on the VG's I think. I have it on my car, but I just let it rattle

2) Possibly the lifters, but most likely the first.

Good luck.

Peter

Thanks for the response bro... although I think that the exhaust stud problem was more common on the VE's, but anything is possible...

Since we don't know what engine you have.... the ticking could be alot of things.

1) Lifters
2) Chain tensioner (VE)
3) VTC (VE)
4) Exhanust manifold studs(VG and VE)Common on both.
5) About 2-3 other various things

I know its a VG... I'm the second owner, and unless someone stuck a nice VE in there for me, then I have to admit I'm stuck with the VG...

Re: Engine Type

Then I think we can narrow it down to sticky lifters or an exhaust manifold stud breakage. Or maybe a overly loud injector?

What kind of oil filter do you use? In my experience with Fram filters did this, they don't have an anti drain valve. All the oil drains out of the top of the engine and it take a bit to build up oil pressure to be able to pump oil back up. Thats why it is more noticible on cold mornings, oil is cold harder to pump.

Re: vtc

Ah that would be really hard problem to have consider he doesn't have any VTCs.

crsmax. That idea about the oil filter is a good idea. Make sure to use a Nissan one and see if that solves it.

Oil Filter

You know what fellas, that might be it... I'm due to take the car in for an oil change this weekend anyway, I hope this solves the problem. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for the suggestions...

Would a low oil volume (really needing an oil change) cause the same kind of effect?

Re: Oil Filter

Yep, low oil might do it also. If your using 10w40, you might want to give a 5w30 a shot.

BigJay. Hey post some pics of those blinks in the mirror thingies. Those sound pretty badassed.

Thanks to all that responded and helped to diagnose the problem. My baby was just thirsty and need a new filter and oil change... So far so good, no more ticking...
