The book says 7-quarts but I've never gotten that much out. If you're just draining the bottom of the trans, you'll get approx 3-1/2 qts out. Best to measure how much comes out and replace that much. Strongly suggest adding a cooler. I just had to have the trans in my '90 rebuild...$1,800!!

ya i hate matic maxima trannies. what happens if u put too much. i put 8.
my car is leaking tranny fluid, but im scared it might be the seal in the transmission that might have broke when i put the tranny on or somthing.

Yea 8-quarts is way too much. Best thing to do is check the level in the hot position on the dip stick. Cold position is inacurrate. Run the car hard for about 3-5 miles and immediately check the level. Keep draining it off until you reach the right level. You may just be blowing fluid out the vent. Even if it is a seal; lowering the level may stop the leak. I dunno...I kind of like auto's. Reading all the problems guys have with 5-speeds. Put on an oil cooler they're less than $30 and not hard to install. There's a lot written on the org about how to install them. Check 4th gen forums.

Ok, silly question but how do I let some fluid out of the tranny? I had a tranny cooler installed and the VB mod done about 6 months ago and I have developed a leak. I was told that it’s coming from the lower seal. Every time I check the fluid level it is high. Very high! Is it as simple as loosening a bolt?
I was thinking of draining fluid and replacing with new and adding one of those transmision leak fixers. Good idea?
Thanks

The drain plug is about a 1" pipe plug facing forward on the drivers side of the trans. It has a 1/2" female square drive. Don't take any bolts out. If you lay under the front of the car it'll be looking right at you. It's best to rig a funnel on a quart bottle to measure how much your getting out. Loosen the plug with a 1/2" drive ratchet (It's probably tight as hell). Unthread the rest by hand and hold the plug in the hole while letting the fluid trickle out. I'd drain about 2-quarts and dirve the car to check the hot level. I don't know anything about the leak fixers, sound like snake oil to me. I think your seals are leaking because you have too much fluid in the box. By the way, the drain plug has a magnet on it be sure to clean it good. Put plenty of news paper down it's a messy job. Hope you had someone compitent do you TB work. I understand these trans are a PIA to work on.
