what would cause a constant 'steering pump' noise?

I looked at a 94 SE at a dealer last night w/228k miles. I took it for a short test drive and it drove great, the only thing really unusual i noticed was a constant noise that sounded like the noise your steering makes when you turn the wheels all the way and hold it. It wasn't real loud but definitely noticeable. Shifting through the auto trans didn't make any difference in the sound either...i don't have a history of the car so obviously i would take it to a auto tech and have it checked out b4 thinking about buying it...any input on what this might be would be appreciated!!

lack of power sterring fluid is one easy thing...and the obvious, a bad power steering pump. i would assume the bearings are shot in the pump.

I had the same problem and it was a leaky power steering hose. Check and see if you have any leaks. If not it could be your pump.

One question. Is it difficult to turn the wheel when it makes that noise?

Cross your fingers and hope for the low fluid. That was the problem in my truck.
