Engine shutting off at certain rpms

I'm new here I've been looking to buy a Maxima. I went and looked at one today but there is a problem. When I was driving it at 5k rpm the engine would act like it would shut off and then come back on. It did this a couple times. It also did it once at around 1k rpm. The engine was warmed up. There was also a licking noise coming from the back of the engine. I couldn't figure out what it was though.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? The car felt like it had good power throughout the powerband.

Also when I started the engine it revved up to 2k rpm and stayed there for a little bit till it warmed up. I'm guessing this is normal to help it warm up faster? Am I correct?

Any and all help would be great. I liked the car but was worried about the engine problems and didn't want to buy it and drive 5 hours home with it and not knowing if it would make it and how bad the problem was.

Car was a 93 Se if that makes a difference.

Thanks
