'89 maxima speedo,odo,and cruise problems

speedometer and odometer quit at the same time. Am guessing this is a sensor problem but not certain. The speed sensor is a magnetic type(hard to come by except at a dealer). Any way to check the sensor easily? Can this also be the reason for my cruise control not working? (It did quit sometime earlier). I have replaced the instrument cluster, no help, and also the cruise control unit under the dash, no help. Has anyone else heard of this type of speed sensor going bad? Any help greatly appreciated.

speed sensor going bad is not that unusual, you may want to check the top of your trans and make sure the connector is in good.
they aren't hard to come by at all

Thanks for reply. Already checked connector. seems fine. Will check again. I have tried several local parts stores with the same luck. Either they show a speed sensor as a mechanical type, for my Max or none at all. The one on mine(automatic tran)is a magnetic type, apparently only a dealer item unless I'm not looking in the right place

I have the same problem on my 1990 maxima. i have been told by several people that I have soem sort of wiring problem. I have repalced the sensor. which at the dealership is $180 and it still didnt work. my next step according to mechanics. is to find somebody that works on electrical and get it fixed.

I haven't replaced the sensor yet, but was getting ready to. Price of $180 sounds in line with what I was quoted. Guess I will do some more wire checking or find someone to do it. Thanks for your responses. Was beginning to think that I had a one of a kind problem.

Hey I've got a red face! Found out that what I thought was the sensor for the speedo/odo was a sensor for the neutral switch ??. The speedo/odo pinion is toward the back of the tranny(kind of under the oil filter) and it was the problem. As stated by internetautomar, it was the wiring conection on the top that was loose. Pushed it in and took care of the problem at least for now. Thanks to all for help.
My cruise still does not work, though. Any ideas on where to get a wiring diagram of the cruise control circuit?
