yesterday in new york it was frezzing outside, so i go to remote start the car, it begins to start up then cuts off, i did that twice, then after that all i hear is the starter turning, i went to get a boost won't start, as i am turning the key it just turns and i hear a hmmm noise, the starter is onlt six months old, any advice could it be bad relay, also i got a alternator put in a couple of days before, and the car was running good before that frezzing, and help will do thanks

 

1. can you hear gas pump "starting" when key turned on?
2. water might be in gas lines (add "antifreeze" in future - not real antifreeze of course )
3. check if you get a spark (if not - open rotor cap and spray with "ignition dry & go")
4. and finally if ur maxima has manual tranny - try "push" start (sorry, doesn't apply to you - I c u've got an GXE)

 

hmmm: Engine not cranking? Starter broken or not gettin enough juice. Check batt. wires , still ? hmmm---> repair/replace starter...

 

the "hmmmm" noise is probably your fuel pump functioning.
it could be lots of things that are wrong. it's not too terribly unusual for a rebuilt starter to fail after 6 months depending upon the quality of the rebuild.
you may want to check the battery connections as well as the alternator connections, it's possible you have a bad ground.

 

When you replaced the alternator did you replace the battery also? Make sure the battery is good.

Also did you get a new alternator or rebuilt? If you got a rebuilt it could be that it isnt good. Test the charging system.

Also can you describe the hmmmm sound a bit more. Does is crank but not start or not crank at all? Is the hmmmm sound the fuel pump? (coming from the back)

 

It's freezing here in brooklyn, eh? You shoulda seen how it was at night. I took my Max for a spin in the middle of the night and I felt like I had a sports suspension. It was so stiff cause it was frozen.

Anyway, did you get a brand new alternator or rebuild?

 

well the same kind of thing happened to me this morning, I too live in new york. im in brooklyn. I too got the same exact sound but my engine turned over, the hmmm is the fuel pump. i turned it like 4-5 times and gave a little gas and it turned over. I have a question though could this be from the radiator freezing? It takes forever for my car to heat up. This could also be because i dont have the correct engine shroud/fan on the car. I have a dual fan shroud on that is wired to come on as the engine turns on. I have to get the correct shroud or connector maybe? CAn anyone help me with this? I think this is also why my heat takes a long time to come on. Almost 1hr 1/2 before it gets hot. Sorry for thread Stealing.

 

your starter is dead...replace it.

the hmmm is the fuel pump.

battery is good because it turns the starter..and even if you jumped it..it still didn't start.

Does this apply to me as well? This is the first time i have had this problem. And it turned over for me. Will this happen to me as well? I got a rebuilt starter and alternator during the summer. I havent had a starting problem since. This is my first experience. I thought that the car was just cold.

 

Get block heaters. Here in MN it'll double digit neg and mine will start just fine. Only because of the block heater.

 

Yea i know that already. Im in the process of getting a new shroud and harness. But i have a question is there a way to wire the fan into the old wiring so it turns on only when needed. theres nothing wrong with the fan i have now its just on all the time. This is because the harness that is for the stock fan cannot go on the fan that i have. The fan i have also goes at 2 speeds. I just need to wire it correctly. i dont know which wire is the fast wire and which wire is the reg wire. If anyone knows it will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

The engine always pumps cooling fluid in 'small loop'. What then happens in the bigger loop do not matter one bit (rad, fans etc). Of course no leaks...

The 'small' loop is engine heads, throttle assy, cabin heater. This loop continues to be closed as long as the thermostat stays closed.

As engine becomes hot, thermostat opens, engine cooling fluid starts the 'bigger loop'. The fans come in pic -if- the temp trigs their temp switch. However, thermostat is the king...

thanks guys for your help, it was the starter, i guess it wasn't built very well, because it worked fine all summer, and the first day it got cold it died. as for the other guy with the starter rebuild jusy save money just in case your starter goes.

 

Or better yet, buy a starter that has a warranty. 1 year. 3 years. Lifetime. If you aren't buying new, might as well buy smart.

Right, right, inter. But people are going to go cheap. If they are going to have the chance of it going south, why not exchange for a free one. I mean, you're already out the labor cost or time. Might as well have some insurance. I have sold all kinds of new and remanufactured electrical parts, a large percentage come back sooner or later. No matter what brand. That's why I said "warranty 1yr, 3yr, lifetime. Point is: Get some kind of warranty. He had his for two seasons and had to buy another. That sucks.
